JohnL Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | CPS failed at 93K, 7 years My Crankshaft Position Sensor finally failed after 93K miles no warning and I was stuck in the parking lot. I was lucky to get it started after a dozen+ tries (cranks but does not start). Drove it straight to my Indy MB mechanic to get it replaced. Lucky for me, I carry a spare, he didn't have one in stock. I learned from the others who experienced the same CPS failure. Roadside service says this is a VERY COMMON issue. And told me to tow it to a dealer for service. They didn't want to even come out to take a look. I wonder why this isn't a scheduled maintence item? I asked my Indy mechanic (after the fact) and he recommends it gets replace every 5 years or so. IMO if your ML is over 5 years old and you haven't replaced your CPS yet, you should carry a spare part no 003-153-27-28.

If the CPS happened to fail, leaving you or your wife in a dangerous situation.....that would be VERY BAD!!

Is it a DIY kind of thing? Depending on where you are (canadian?) about $150.00. It is a DIY if you are patient and have small hands.

JohnL Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: CPS failed at 93K, 7 years If you're in the US, $82.50 from Duval Motor Cars http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=213951 type in "CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR" You'll need a torx #8 socket. I wasn't in a place to DIY. My mechanic charged me for .5 hours of work.
