GL450 transmission croaked at 57k miles

My GL450 transmission decided to eat itself last weekend at 57,000 miles. The transmission fluid was changed at 40k miles as recommended by Mercedes.

We were driving down a washboard road in San Diego county (would have been in my G500, but that had chewed up a propshaft). It slipped out of 3rd gear into no gear a few times. Drove home in 2nd and 4th. Subsequent dismantling revealed a nice sprinkling of glitter in the pan and inside the filter.

The Merc re-built transmission is going to cost the better part of $5k to buy and install.

Not really what I was expecting in a $80k vehicle.

RE: GL450 transmission croaked at 57k miles

Oh, how I hate to hear that for both our sakes. Our other set of wheels is a GL450. I don't want my G500 propshaft to break also!
Good luck,
Burch

That transmission was made in Europe.

I feel your pain- our ML500 tranny crapped the bed around 55K- yet my new tranny and torque converter had me around 7500 after the install... and this was an indy doing the work-

Programmed obsolescence...I really do not like these new MB transmissions at all. My parts guy at local dealer says that the new transmissions are a big problem and orders many...

What happened to the G prop shaft?
