W5YK Extreme Veteran Date registered: May 2006 Location: San Diego Vehicle(s): 2002 G500, Unimog U2450, Posts: 545 | GL450 transmission croaked at 57k miles My GL450 transmission decided to eat itself last weekend at 57,000 miles. The transmission fluid was changed at 40k miles as recommended by Mercedes. We were driving down a washboard road in San Diego county (would have been in my G500, but that had chewed up a propshaft). It slipped out of 3rd gear into no gear a few times. Drove home in 2nd and 4th. Subsequent dismantling revealed a nice sprinkling of glitter in the pan and inside the filter. The Merc re-built transmission is going to cost the better part of $5k to buy and install. Not really what I was expecting in a $80k vehicle. | ||

My parts guy at local dealer says that the new transmissions are a big problem and orders many... What happened to the G prop shaft? | ||
