2009 GL Bluetec

What weight oil do you use? Owner's manual does not mention specific weight or brand. Mobil 1 has been mentioned among others, but I want suggestions.

RE: 2009 GL Bluetec

Don't worry about weight.

Much more important is fact you must use Mercedes-spec 299.51 oil.  (229.5 is NOT the same)

For all practical purposes this means using Mobil 1 5w-40 ESP Formula M that's pretty much only available at Mercedes dealers.  ESP means emissions system protection and means formulated to protect the diesel particulate filter, i.e. low ash.

You should find a sticker under the hood that cautions against adding any quantity of noncompliant oil.

Re: 2009 GL Bluetec

Thank you. After researching I have found exactly what you suggest to be the MB rule. These are new and it is amazing that there are not more specific points in the manual. Maybe they want the service department to be aware but others not as much.

1 quart of the eurea additive is $19. Fill up every 10,000 miles for $300. The price will come down surely as more are sold. Maybe just buy a cow every 10,000 miles!

Holy cow! Does that include an oil change or is that just the urea? Can you do it yourself?

Not mine! A friend of mine just made the jump. He is learning all about it one day at a time. I saw it Saturday and it is a beautiful machine.
