British Columbia Summer 09?

I'm toying with the idea of a G-Wagen trail ride in early summer 2009 in BC.

We have the Whipsaw trail here, which is a BF Goodrich "outstanding trail". I've never done it, but I hear its great (in fact, its outstanding )

Here's some links:

http://chrisb.users.superford.org/Bronco/Trip_Reports/2008/Canada_D...
http://www.lornesmith.ca/whipsaw/whipsaw_list.html
http://www.bc4x4.com/tr/2005/whipsaw/

Any interest amongst the G community to meet in BC in 2009?

Cheers,

Michael

Re: British Columbia Summer 09?

Are Albertans allowed? Depending on the dates you pick, I might be able to join in this summer.

That would be good fun to have a group of us from Alberta go out. Safety in numbers as we slow everybody down on the #1.

Great idea. Here is another option from the completed trips over at my stopping grounds... Expo Portal.

I don't see a map on the net but he gives some cordinates under his pictures and I will check my Backroads Map book later.

RE: British Columbia Summer 09?

Is "Early Summer" considered July / Late June? Even in low-snow years here some stuff isn't open 'til August.

Sounds cool to me, I'd love to explore around up there.

RE: British Columbia Summer 09?

Phew... glad I stumbled over to this forum to check out a misplaced post or I would have missed this discussion. Sounds like an excellent idea.

Some logistical considerations:

Dates:
- I'll be tied up or away until about Aug 17th.
- I know from experience that you cannot fully commit to a trail in June as the snow at higher elevations can stop you. The snowpack is considerably thinner this year than most, but we are currently getting blizzard after blizzard in eastern BC, so that may change.
- Judging from the account of the guys who did the Whipsaw, snow could still be a concern in early July too.
- September long weekend (or thereabouts) looks like a good target to me.

Routes:
- The whipsaw looks excellent for several reasons: looks fun, doable and is sort of midway for those of us coming from the East
- If the route selected is on the coast, and we have enough of us coming from the East, perhaps we should find some routes en-route.
- I have a book called 'Four Wheling in the BC Interior' by Mark Bostwick. I haven't tried anything in the book yet. But he covers from Nelson to Bella Coola via Kelowna/ Kamloops / Williams Lake. And I can get from Cranbrook (where I live) to Nelson off road.
- Of course if we tried the above... that would pretty much make up a treffen on its own and blow all our time. But perhaps a few tidbits on the way would make the long trip more interesting.

Hope we can get something going... even if it's a modest effort.

My vote is for the whipsaw late August or September.

I'm for July or August (including September long weekend).

Jim, that sounds like an interesting trip from Cranbrook to Bella Coola. I'm going to have to look for that book.

Re: British Columbia Summer 09?

I stumbled upon that book at the local Save-On-Foods in the 'books of local interest' rack. Naturally I snapped it up.

We have to work on a route through the rockies!

RE: British Columbia Summer 09?

Hey,

Just checked back and noticed this is getting some interest here from the Northwest/Southwest(?) crowd! I have a friend who has done whipsaw a few times, I'll try to get some more info from him, or better yet, bring him as a guide if we decide to do that trail.

Its looking like late August is probably the better choice now. I'll be doing a road trip down to LA in July so I'll probably be camped out after that. Besides, as mentioned snow can be an issue, although the snow accumulations are significantly lower this year than last.

Here's a map and some more info on the Whipsaw....

RE: British Columbia Summer 09?

Are you all still low on snow? We've had some recent weather that pushed our ski area over 400 inches for the season, now it's (finally) an average snow year.

I'd love to join in this excursion, maybe there's some others down here that will join as well. The more the merrier I assume?

Anybody from BC / Alb joining in the Tahoe Treffen this June?

RE: British Columbia Summer 09?

Yes definitely, the more the merrier!

I'd love to make the Tahoe trip but the G is not going to be 100% road ready by then. It is getting there, but it will be July before I'll be able to do any real trips.

Looks like I may have arranged a bit of a guide for our group; my one friend who's done the trail before is onboard to join our group. Doesn't drive a G, but hey, everyone has flaws right?

The last time I checked the snow was the trip to my cabin in the mountains a couple weeks ago. I had about 2 feet of snow there at that point, but its been snowing a lot the last few weeks. For comparison, however, there was 6 ft of snow there last year... I'll be up in the mountains again in the next week or so, should have a better idea how much worse things have gotten.

Cheers,

Michael

I had been talking to my friend about doing Whipsaw, she said my G is too nice to take without rocker protection, there are a couple bad spots along the way where I could get damage.

Re: British Columbia Summer 09?

I just recently drove my G from Kelowna back to Cranbrook. That's a fairly long pull in a G. I am starting to think the above suggested loop on its own would be sufficient without those of us coming from the East doing more on the way to the meeting point. Just a thought.

Looking forward to getting some dates down as we get closer!
