Spring/Summer 2010 Utah/Colorado?

Is anyone going to be in SE Utah or SW Colorado May or June? I may be able to make plans and it would be great to have someone to do Moab or Telluride, especially in the June 25 to July 4 time frame.

I'm interested. I do have some things to do to the G before it's ready to go; but I'm interested.

Vacation schedule is centered around a trip to Ft Lewis, WA to greet our son when he returns from deployment in Iraq. This would be a driving trip to sightsee along the way, and has been scheduled for Aug or Sep. However, he called today, and said that there are some unsubstantiated rumors floating around that they may return early in July. If so, that would put off any trip to Moab and/or the San Juans until Sep or Oct. I'll keep you posted.

I might be able to drive to the Rockies for the 4th of July.

Burch, would you able to stay past the 4th?

Karl

RE: Spring/Summer 2010 Utah/Colorado?

Karl,
Yes, I could shift the dates to the "right" a little bit if I plan ahead now. It is a matter of scheduling at my office.
I've really enjoyed your pics and comments from the Baja trip. The trailer discussion has been a learning experience for me but I'm sorry for all the inconvenience for you and the group. We "won" a hotel stay (paid dearly) at a luxury hotel in Telluride at a benefit dinner last week so I'm planning to use that if I can for part of the trip to the area.

If my kid's unit doesn't come home in July, I would be interested. It's also dependent on some potential health issues that have just come up; and are still to be determined.

Right now the G is up on jackstands; but it should be ready to go by then.

RE: Spring/Summer 2010 Utah/Colorado?

I just got another leave signed off by the commander in chief here, that sure make my travels a bit more flexible.

Returning from Oregon a few earlier I should be ready for the red slick rocks of Moab or the ever beauty of the Colorado's Rockies. I will certainly sport the Adventure Trailer, might have to camp out in front of the fancy Telluride hotel for sure.

Where do you want to go?

Karl

Moab area would be my preference. For as many times as I've been, there are still many trails I have not explored - like Lockhart Basin. Beef Basin is another very neat area - lots of Anasazi dwellings and a SUPER view campsite overlooking Big Pocket in the Salt Creek Basin. That one can be a 2 or 3 day loop.

I should know more about my possibilities within a couple of weeks.

Burch, Are you interested in doing some camping or only day trips out from your hotel?

"Burch, Are you interested in doing some camping or only day trips out from your hotel?"

Dutch,
Primarily day trips because my bride loves to ride but is not big into camping. She is fine staying a night at the hotel while I'm out however. I can borrow camping gear from my daughter and her husband but I don't have any of my own.
Burch

PS. We both hope your health issues are being resolved and are not serious.

Another Possibility

Although probably quite crowded, due to its popularity, the White Rim Trail is another possibility. I've never done the complete loop; but it does require at least one night camping.

Re: Spring/Summer 2010 Utah/Colorado?

Funny, I'll bedoing the white rim may 31-june 1st. We have a couple spots available. The rest of the week well be doing day trips from Moab. As far as telluride on the fourth goes, I am usualy up there anyway for that holliday, though I may not have more than 48 hours of leave. I'll see if I can extend that a few days. Just an FYI for those of you hotelling it up there for the fourth, you may be sol in getting a room. They fill up a year in advance!

Yeah, it's only 90 miles of moderate trails total.

It looks like my kid is coming back from Iraq in August, so a G trip at the end of June to early July would be possible. However, I think I will take a pass until Sept or Oct; as I really have no desire to compete with the madding crowd of summer vacation, July 4th holiday for open space in the high desert

I'm thinking of driving to Colorado before the 4th of July, spend some time at the Cherry Festival/4th of July in Paonia and move into the San Juan's after wards. Met some interesting people at the Expo, probably with no holes in their socks, and might do some trails with them in the Quray/Silverton/Telluride area.....

I don't have holes in my socks, so I probably wouldn't fit in. I just wish that it weren't so darned far for me to travel to get there. I was also hoping to explore some new ground in the Moab area. I think I've been on almost every trail in the Ouray/Silverton/Telluride area. Maybe in Sept or Oct.

It looks like our kid is coming in from deployment in mid-August, so I might be up for something in late September or October.

Looks like a better time for me will be mid to late September to early October. I'll start another thread on that date when I have a better idea on the time frame.
