Memorial Weekend 2010

I like to check out the Marble Bath, Death Valley over the Memorial weekend

and need an interested party to join me to count and see if we still have all the marbles......

I know it is kind of a short notice, but I wanted to eliminate all the hot air blowing wannabees.

Saturday at Schatzi's for a sandwich whole wheat with margarine & sprouts

RE: Memorial Weekend 2010

Me too K-Dawg.
The truck is in the driveway in pieces. Redoing front brakes and such. A little TLC before the Oregon trip.
Thor is dropping by for a beer Saturday nite. We'll toast to you.

RE: Memorial Weekend 2010

Ouch, really wish I could join you Karl, unfortunately Im stuck in my garage here in San Francisco re-gearing Krash's axles with your old 4.86 r/p.

There is a slim chance I could be done by Saturday, but considering I just removed the rear axle from the truck last night, and I still need to find a metric dial gauge and magnetic base, Im pretty sure I will be spending my weekend with my recently inherited axle tools.

OK......for everybody to read......

nothing but hot air, excuses & excuses, just because the last breakfast meal was a bit spicy.

Left alone by my friends, even the guy with the red truck is not available......

The cold beer will still taste fine

Y'all have a great weekend

Re: Memorial Weekend 2010

Karl,

read Eric Gauger:

"This is that little traveler’s devil sitting on my shoulder, telling me not to go, telling me it would be much easier to end the day early, get something to eat and fall asleep. This Little Horn of Daniel’s Sea Beast has always sat on my shoulder at such moments, telling me to go home.

I consider that little devil momentarily, before I set off in the sun, staining my shoes bright with the yellow of pollen. The walking awakens me, and I revel in this bizarre trek through blooms. After a little more than a mile, I get to the lake of phacelia, and begin to round it.
A ferruginous hawk hangs above me in the air for some time, until the sun begins to go down, and in the waning light, I can’t help but to wonder why that devil ever had a place on my shoulder.

We all have the traveler’s devil, sitting on our shoulder, telling us to go home, or more often to stay home. A lot of people write me to say that they want to travel as much as I do, but they don’t have the time, or they are unwell. Others tell me that they are not traveling, because they are saving up for that big trip to Madagascar. Some people tell they aren’t young anymore, but the biggest reason they tell me they can’t travel is that they can’t afford it.

But travel isn’t a luxury waiting for ideal circumstances in our lives. It is what we were made to do."

With all the vehicles down, maybe we all ought to hop on the "G Bus" and head to the desert.....I will be hanging close to home preparing for another adventure.

RE: Memorial Weekend 2010

We had a great time revisiting some of the places, and discovering new ones as well, in the vast Death Valley mountains and low lands.

Entering the National Park from the North, had to stop at the Bakery in Bishop to stock up some good breads, we followed the DV road to the South Eureka Valley road.
Here getting onto the dirt, the temps were still in the mid 70F, the tire pressure was lowered to 15psi - including the Adventure trailer.

After a peaceful drive - no racing around my friends - we settled into the first night camp directly in front of the enormous Eureka Dunes.

I do believe Steve G remembers the nice camps site including the sturdy on-site furnishings. For dinner, Pasta with spicy Italian sausage and Three Cheese tomato sauce, we were joined by a new found friend, a local teacher from Bishop.

Sunday morning we headed for the famous Marble Bath, climbing the Dedeckera Narrows towards the Steel Pass. I must say the Mercedes-Benz G-500 did the job just marvelous, the trailer followed nicely with all wheels on the ground through those tight obstacles and the untrained driver didn't do anything to screwed this up.

The Marble Bath not only had kept all its marbles and ducks in one row, but was joined by another visitor/water loving creature. You will have to wait for the upcoming pictures.......different department

Next stop, the Hot Springs in the Saline Valley. It was an all open event, a few older overweight gents dressed in the Adam's costume were playing with their balls - Boccia it was.....
No, the chained lady was not present, but another (older) Aphrodite came over to check out our trailer/kitchen set up - could be....

The never ending Saline Road brought us finally to the Lippenkott Road turnoff, and no we didn't stay long at the Hot Springs, Harald!
The drive up that grade was exiting, Patricia was very quite, the steep drop-off on her side and held on tightly whenever we crossed over the occasional wash-out in this already very narrow road. Luckily the only opposite traffic was encountered on the upper section, I did have to back up with the trailer a bit to let the boys in their Jeeps crawl by.

The Racetrack with its mysterious rocks was still present, so the few Japanese tourists in their rental Commanders......Teekettle Juntion lost its single sign post to a unsightly triple one, I guess to handle more pots. It sure lost its uniqueness by now.

We turn towards Hunter Mountain and passed on the Lost Burro Mine - we were just mined-out.

Our friend Alan will remember that quaint lunch spot we found passed the light colored sand spots in the road. What a nice camp site it is, surrounded by a vast array of blooming wildflowers a real cozy spot with a wide spanning view. We stayed here for the night having the staple lentil with wiener soup.

The next day, Memorial Day, we continued up the road for the Lee Flats past Hunter Mountain. For what ever reason, we found ourselves at the Goldbelt Spring - must have missed a turn in the road. That's the place we played around with the big old truck wheel, Eric do you remember?
Interestingly many truck tracks were going further down that narrow valley. I could not see any "Do Not..." signs, so we followed those leading tracks.
Alan talked about this road connecting to something, but like so many other times this road ended quite abruptly and we had to turn our rig around.

Arriving finally at the Lee Flats, we turn to the North onto the White Mountain Talc Road to look for the Cerro Gordo Road. Harald had let one of our "Expeditions" a few years earlier, but down from the CG mine and I didn't remember the details any longer.
I picked a nice road, the first real turn-off towards the mountains and found a great little lunch spot (could be a camp site as well). We followed that road until it got real step and narrow - and I chickened out. No way for me to turn around with that trailer on my hitch, in case the road ends again. There were many tire tracks still leading uphill, but.....

So we turned around while it still was possible, backtracked all the way to the WMT Road, turned North again and found the "real" Cerro Gordo Road.

Ascending all the way up to the mine was a pretty drive, but staying up high almost along the ridge line, driving that tiny little narrow was just spectacular!
It took for ever to reach the remaining structures of the Salt Tram high above the Saline Valley and the Owens Lake.
Not only was the old miner's cabin pretty much restored, but I noticed a few of the heavy timbers at the cable tram station had been replaced to insure its integrity for years to come. ty
Another never ending roads down to Swansea, this time through patches of tightly grown pinon trees pin-striping the g-wagen in its entirety. This untrained driver kept both hands on the steering wheel while descending a completely washed out road - all the way down to the smooth asphalt of Highway 190.

Size is 285/75-16

They sure look nice, a bit noisier and they got me where I wanted to go, no leaks or punctures - so I like 'em

That truck would look great with orange turn signal lenses, eh?
More pics please.

p.s. Okay, enough with the concrete benches already. Still too early to joke about since I can still hear the shattering of beauty and celebration. Much too painful. Thank God for James.
