Whipsaw 2010

Not sure if this is the right place for trip reports, but here it goes.

These are pictures from the yearly Whipsaw trip in BC, Canada every July 1'st.
Normally this time of the year we would get beautifull weather and amazing panoramic views as the trail takes you over the mountains at just over 6000ft altitude.
This year however, we hit snow. Not only that but we were the first ones through 3 mountain passes/trails. Spent lots of time breaking trail, showeling snow, clearing deadfall, etc. My g was the only truck on 37's, fully locked, so with a couple of exceptions it was always at the front, breaking trail. Fuel consuption went through the roof (~22L/100km). 5 days in the trip, I was getting low on fuel (1/2 tank)...all my reserve was gone, and we hit this VERY overgrown trail, that one the GPS looked like a main road....it was supposed to be a shortcut. Not only that we were driving dead slow, not being able to see the truck 20ft ahead of you in places, but we hit snow, late in the day about 4 hours in from the trail head. Too far in to turn arround and maybe not enough diesel, and now knowing how much snow is ahead, and if it will be passable at all. Up in the mountains the snow is not level on the road...it follows the slope of the mountain face, in general way to slanted to drive on. We spent 3-4 hours showeling snow, leveling it out just to make it through a 300ft section. After that the road turned on the face of the mountain that was exposed to the sun more, so the snow got lighter and we were able to make better time.
On july 1'st (Canada day) we were camped at Cabin lake. The lake sits in a bowl and the only road in and out has a few steep gradients. It has taken us anout 2 hours the previous day to make it to the lake through the snow. When I woke up in the morning, the lake was frozen and it was snowing lightly. knowing how fast the weather can change, we quickly packed and got out....again very nervous if we would be able to make it out.
In the end everybody made it through the trip, no major problems with the trucks.

Here's some pics and vids:

Working hard...

My truck could stay on top of the snow, but then it would be very hard for the others to follow...they would fall through the snow, so I had to break through the snow. I don't like driving like this, but it was talking a lot of time and fuel "taking it easy". Sometimes best way is to commit, and give it hell.

Re: Whipsaw 2010

No problem
One week later the weather flipped, and it's been warm ever since.
Oh well...one more month till my California trip. 6000km, crossing 2 deserts, 50+degC weather in some places. A little bit nervous and excited atthe same time.
Thanks!

Re: Whipsaw 2010

Oh, those are LED Christmass lights
I have an AC inverter in my truck, so the intention was to plug them in at night to give a nice soft light in the camp.
It's one of those ideeas that sounds really good, but in reality it doesn't work. First night they worked beautifull Unfortunately the 2'nd day they got caught on branches, and ripped off the truck (well, pieces of it).

Maybe on a trip with different terrain they would work, but not here

I like your custom roll bar that allows you to still use the folding soft top. Who made this for you?

RE: Whipsaw 2010

The roll bar is actually more of a roof rack. I made it myself with the help of a friend....or, a friend made it with my help It's made out of aluminum, and even though it's VERY strong for carying cargo, I'm not sure how well it would do in a rollover situation.

Yeah, BC is nice...but I just got back from a trip across Western US, and it was really nice as well. I drove at over 3000m altitude, drove through 2 deserts, saw some vulcanic craters, sand dunes, and a lot of other things.
I'll start another post on that though Just need some time to unpack, upload pics and videos...etc.

My truck moves well...lol! Depends what you compare it with. Mechanically is in very good condition so it's better than other diesel G's, but on some of those high mountain passes in the US, I couldn't even stay in the trucks lane...I was way over on the shoulder.

RE: Whipsaw 2010

Hey there, I know this is a crazy late reply to such a great thread, but I'm brand new to the G scene and tried to send the OP a PM, but it is just stuck in my outbox????

Anyway, I was wondering about the "roof" rack on your cabrio; is it something that was custom fab'd or does a company make it? I think this is my first post on this forum, so please bear with my noobness...

Thanks for any info!
