Las Tarambillas revisited

one year after our first epic west-east crossing of Baja California I revisited the east side of the Las Tarambillas canyon.
There was new mining activity at the beginning and some sign of a hunting camp right before the oasis.
Past that not a single tire track visible - only tracks of mountain lion, big horn and deer.
Recent rain has added a lot of new growth. In parts the trail can only be located if you have been there before.

A friend and I hiked as far as the big cave with pool about 12 miles in. We found 3 recent mountain lion kills on our way. And the water present in the pools (we had a good rain about 5 weeks ago) were mosquito heaven. Nasty buggers!

As an interesting note - it is amazing how we can re-connect to our genetic imprints from times long past. I hear and see things in the wild that surprise me. Not a single trip where I don't find Indian tools. This time I found a beautiful and unusual tool (no clue what it was used for - unlike the many arrow heads I find). Well, I found a nice head as well.

It was a beautiful sunday afternoon adventure.
I was glad to see that not a single soul had been in this beautiful canyon since we had left about a year ago.

sure I can

the tool has an indent (like many others i have found) that make it very easy to position your thumb to hold it better

I included tool and head for reference as well

Alan,

no, the cave I visited yesterday, was the one I found with Karl while scouting for the trip

RE: Las Tarambillas revisited

There must have been a nice waterfall for a short time.

Alan,

it is fairly close to the site were this picture was taken on our trip. Just another canyon parallel to the one we crossed - I believe

RE: Las Tarambillas revisited

Harald, Although I am by no means an expert, I believe the mystery tool you have found is one that was used to make arrowheads and other spear points. Those usually have a thumb indent such as you describe, a very worked-looking outer edge and possibly composed of a different material (harder than the obsidian or chert) used for points. I once found such a tool high in the western Cascades, and I was amazed how "comfortably" it fit in my hand.

Anyway, thanks for sharing, what a cool place. I hope to get down there one day.

RE: Las Tarambillas revisited

thanks Woody, I'll check that out

I find chippings and arrowheads almost every day around my house
found a really nice one yesterday and lost in the gravel in front of the garage - could not find it again

Re: Las Tarambillas revisited

avatar pic was taken by Tom Deckowski (or maybe his friend) during our Anza Borrego G event (or was it in Death Valley?) - don't remember the year (Anza 2004? Death Valley 2002?). And yes, I look older now.

Harald,

You may be looking older but at least you now have two 'birds' on your arm instead of one
