RE: Windshield drawing

Nicholas,

If you could post the dimensions, I'd appreciate it. I too am in need of new glass.

RE: Windshield drawing

Just for curiousities sake you do plan on using auto quality glass (so it doesn't shatter when a rock hits it)? I'm sure there's some spec for it, but i don't know the spec.

Actually, anybody know sources in the US... sf bay area would be ideal, but why be picky to start? I'd like to replace my winshield one of these days, but it'd be nice to get one without the blacked out area that the current windhields have behind the rear-view mirror... which happens to be in my field of view.

Mine too - especially when going down hill and to the right. Unless you can find someone to cut one to size, I think you're limited; as all factory glass now has it.

The glass you need is just standard laminated 3mmglass 2mmnylon then 3mm glass any glass merchant should stock it as it used generally now for doors for safety in UK anyway.
If you ask for a new sheet to be used you get the laminate factory symbol too in the corner.
I had my LWB rears done in it too as i carry important court documents and the toughened isto easy to smash with a punch or similar

Yes you're right, its called "layered glass", used in glass doors ore facades, and it can be cut to any size. Also, you can harden the glass sheets, this way it becomes 5x stronger to mechanical and thermal tresses. That is why I need the dimensions, so i can order my new windshield at the place i work.

RE: Windshield drawing

Dennis, I have a couple of questions ...

Don't you have an insurance that includes windshields etc.? Last time I had to get a new one it was put in for free and it didn't cost me any 'no claim' either. Since I am in need for another new one and I am not sure if a second one within a year is still for free, I was wondering if I could tag along.

If so ... how much would a front windshield be if you order it at your worksite?

Is it possible to get them tanned (Like the original ones) as well?

Regards, Rick

Re: Windshield drawing

to answer your first question:
No my insurance doestn't cover it because i have the cheapest possible, oldtimer etc. costs me about 130 euro/year. Not very much, so it doesnt cover very much. As we call it WA. WA-plus would indeed cover it, but that costs about 130 Euro extra, and i dont want/need that.

to answer your other question:
Well until i have the dimensions i cant answer the price question, but im sure i can order two if i want

I dont know if i can tan it, i guess you mean the black/green strip at the top of the window? ore a compleet color tan?

If you want more info email me, that way we can have contact in Dutch, and as seeying you live in Berghem, i think we can figure something out. Its very close, i live in Keldonk a small place in the area of Veghel.

RE: Windshield drawing

My understanding is that "AS-2" (Auto Safety) is the correct thickness to the standard OEM windscreen (1/4").

My local glass guy can cut it for a less than $100. (As opposed to the OEM version---$1,200 from Safelite, $1,000 Dealer). Granted, the OEM has the Rainsensor, etc, but on my '80, dont-a-needa.

RE: Windshield drawing

Right then above is the drawing but to talk you thru it to make a template incase you dont understand.here goes:

Start by drawing a rectangle 1478x508 the bottom of the screen is flat then find dead centre and make a vertical centre line, measure up this centre line 610mm. the top of the screen has a very slight curve to it.
from the centre top of the rectangle measure left and right 694mm, draw a line from each bottom corner and bisect where the curve meets this line. If you now measure along this line it should read 510mm.
The screen corners are rounded of course the easiest way to get this right is to draw with a pair of compasses one circle at 50mm radius and the other 47.5mm radius in card and cut them out, then fit the smaller one into the bottom corners and the bigger one into the top as the drawing, until it touches the lines...this is your curve.
I hope this is nt too confusing email me or post I will check once in a while to see any posting questions
