Wolfgang Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | Google Wifi Here's a speed test for the new citywide wireless connection available free of charge in Mountain View which I use right now to access P3: Using Speakeasy Speedtest: Download Speed: 978 kbps (122.3 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 944 kbps (118 KB/sec transfer rate) So now one can connect the Benz for free, and at around 1 Mbps it feels pretty fast as well.

Works fine at 35 MPH on local streets. Then onto the highway, streaming video at 60 MPH without problems. Wolfgang Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: Google Wifi It's slower this AM: Download Speed: 168 kbps (21 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 807 kbps (100.9 KB/sec transfer rate) We'll see if it can withstand more users and traffic coming online. Tropos is in charge of setting up the network and tuning it - It's not easy!!! They also did the citywide WiFi in Corpus Christi, Texas. Also, Palo Alto is setting up a WiFi network for public safety around California Avenue, for testing: http://www.firetide.com

Wolfgang Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: Google Wifi pleubner - 8/23/2006 9:39 AM ... and for those in europe... By the way, Daimler labs are working on a different system, running at 5.9 GHz. Antennas are installed for about a year now in the California testbed around Palo Alto, about 20 on El Camino, and 4 or 5 on highway 101. Here's a picture what they look like. If anybody finds one take some pics... ![]() PS. I'm driving to San Francisco for dinner tonight and should pass 4 of them. ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Wolfgang 8/23/2006 8:16 PM (DSRC_rsu.jpg) Attachments ---------------- ![]()

Wolfgang Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: Google Wifi Here some more info. ![]() GoogleWiFi covers the city of Mountain View only, the city where Google is located. Here's a start: http://wifi.google.com/support San Francisco is also in the works, together with Earthlink, but that may not go online until next year. This morning the speed is very fast, and just as designed slightly under 1 Mbps. I optimised a bit. It's fastest when in line of sight of an antenna. I now use a 200 mWatt WiFi modem so I can connect a network, and the signal is up to - 68 dBm to the closest lampost antenna, which is a very strong signal. WAN Connection Info: Signal level: -68 dBm Bit rate: 12 Missed beacon: 0 ESSID: GoogleWiFi Mode: 802.11g Frequency: 2.442 GHz Channel: 7

Wolfgang Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | Re: Google Wifi nimit - 8/24/2006 4:23 PM I just wonder how much longer it would be free though :P So far google agreed to run it for 5 years, and presumably free of charge. They see it as a way to give something back to the community where they are based and as a testbed for location based services. It cost about one million USD to build. The Mercedes guys might have something by 2010. But it might require a different radio. Edited by Wolfgang 8/24/2006 8:22 PM
