Here's a speed test for the new citywide wireless connection available free of charge in Mountain View which I use right now to access P3:

Using Speakeasy Speedtest:

Download Speed: 978 kbps (122.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 944 kbps (118 KB/sec transfer rate)

So now one can connect the Benz for free, and at around 1 Mbps it feels pretty fast as well.

Ya, very. Just did some more testing with my Wi-Fi expert. Works fine at 35 MPH on local streets. Then onto the highway, streaming video at 60 MPH without problems.

RE: Google Wifi

It's slower this AM:

Download Speed: 168 kbps (21 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 807 kbps (100.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

We'll see if it can withstand more users and traffic coming online.

Tropos is in charge of setting up the network and tuning it - It's not easy!!!
They also did the citywide WiFi in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Also, Palo Alto is setting up a WiFi network for public safety around California Avenue, for testing:

By the way, Daimler labs are working on a different system, running at 5.9 GHz. Antennas are installed for about a year now in the California testbed around Palo Alto, about 20 on El Camino, and 4 or 5 on highway 101. Here's a picture what they look like. If anybody finds one take some pics...

PS. I'm driving to San Francisco for dinner tonight and should pass 4 of them.

RE: Google Wifi

Here some more info.

GoogleWiFi covers the city of Mountain View only, the city where Google is located.

Here's a start: http://wifi.google.com/support

San Francisco is also in the works, together with Earthlink, but that may not go online until next year.

This morning the speed is very fast, and just as designed slightly under 1 Mbps. I optimised a bit. It's fastest when in line of sight of an antenna. I now use a 200 mWatt WiFi modem so I can connect a network, and the signal is up to - 68 dBm to the closest lampost antenna, which is a very strong signal.

WAN Connection Info:
Signal level: -68 dBm
Bit rate: 12
Missed beacon: 0
ESSID: GoogleWiFi
Mode: 802.11g
Frequency: 2.442 GHz
Channel: 7

So far google agreed to run it for 5 years, and presumably free of charge. They see it as a way to give something back to the community where they are based and as a testbed for location based services. It cost about one million USD to build.

The Mercedes guys might have something by 2010. But it might require a different radio.

No, I took the photo, Joe. Here's another one, the 5.9 GHz DSRC antenna closest to the DaimlerChrysler R&D North America.
On the intersection of El Camino and Page Mill in Palo Alto.

Here's a map of the post onto which that last DSRC antenna is mounted. Stuffed into the corner of the intersection....

Ya think it would be easier to see if the arrow were red?

Ya think they'll be getting worried about you taking all these pictures, especially now in this time?

On a more serious note, amazing how technology has gone, and how much money companies have made to be offering this!!

Go the next step and "Geek Your Ride".

Build a PC into your ML then you can even use VOIP to get free phonecalls over WIFI! No more working out which phone will work in your car.

In Michigan there is a DSRC testbed under construction as well. DSRC is different from WiFi.
