5 speed gearbox - when?

Hi guys, Im soon to buy a ML 320, been speaking to an owner and he stated that I should avoid the earlier models that had a 4 speed gear box. Only buy the models that had the 5 speed gearbox onward.

1. Do you agree?

2. Which year did the 5 speed gearbox start?

Thanks very much,

Scott.

There were never ML's built with 4 speed transmissions....

Thanks.

You may be thinking of the transfer case. It did change several times before the 2000 model year. My 99ML has the third generation transfer case but it still has it's problems. I think it was the 4th generation that was changed to a 52-48 gear ratio (mine I believe is a 51-49).

Re: 5 speed gearbox - when?

There's nothing wrong with the transmissions of any model year. What problems that the tranny's do have afflict all the tranny's.

That is unless your talking about the binding that is mentioned above. But that's not really any sort of problem or even an annoyance. It's just a change they made that makes things smoother along with thousands of tweaks that they made through the life of the car.

Well, that's my opinion at least....

I believe the person telling you this is somewhat mistaken. As I understand it, the earlier V8 (430 engines) down shiftd a lot when tasked. The V8 in the ML500 is more powerful and these downshifts on steep grades are a rare, if at all. 430 folks, can you confirm this?

RE: 5 speed gearbox - when?

Thanks everyone for your replies. I guess another way to ask the question might be;

When did the second generation (if there was an official designation as such) of M classes begin? Or were there slight improvements each year?

Someone told me that the model with the indicators on the side-mirrors was the 3rd generation and vastly improved in many ways (something like 1,000 improvements made?)

Basically, Ive been told to avoid the first generation models (98 onward) Just wondering when the first major improvement might have occured and what is deemed a 2nd generation M class.

Hope this makes sense and that Im on the right track.

Regards,

Scott.

Let me put it this way. If I buy another ML, it will be a 2002 or newer. The '98's and '99's are the worst in reliability, IMHO. They had the flaky and expensive sporadic AAM (all activity module) problems. The newer ones are much improved.

um i can confirm that the 430 downshifts a shitload. BUt ive never driven a 500 so i wouldnt know. Somewhere on wolfgangs site i found the shifting order for teh 430 compared to the 55 and the 500. Also somewhere else i read that the 430 and the 55amg share the same tranny, i read it on the other boards.

Thanks! Sorry for my convoluted line of questioning, this is basically what I needed to know. My budget wont quite spring for a 2002 model, so Im thinking Ill take the middle ground and go for a 2000/01 build and avoid the 98/99 models entirely.

Re: 5 speed gearbox - when?

Excuse me BUT our three 98 ML's are rock solid reliable. I had many more problems with an Accura than I've had with our ML's. Never been stranded anywhere.

What AAM problem are you talking about? No problems ever. Except when the garage attendant fried my father in laws car with a bad jump. The big puff of smoke was a big indications.

I've barely had to change fluids, approaching the 3rd year now.

bigcatny - 10/17/2006 8:42 AM Excuse me BUT our three 98 ML's are rock solid reliable. I had many more problems with an Accura What AAM problem are you talking about? .

The AAM problems are quite talked about from forum to forum. What happens is they quit recognizing keys and the dealer sells new keys to replace the 'bad' ones. Each time a new key is programmed, after awhile it loses the programming annd a new key again. Once you are up to 8 keys, it's over for your AAM and a new one is over $3,000. What makes people so sore about it is because many of these keys were replaced under warranty and when the warranty ran out, then it was revealed to the owner that his AAM was bad. This didn't happen to all ML's but 98-00 were the worst for this to happen.

Note that I own a '99. While my recent reliability has been great, earlier problems (especially those the first owner had) were ridiculous. My tranny has been superb but I know those who have had tranny failures before 50,000 miles with these so called sealed for life trannys. Mine has 165,000 miles and shifts smoothly and I don't experience the erratic downshifts some have talked about plagueing their ML430's.

You've had good luck with all 3. That's great. You beat the odds astronomically. Overall average, the 98 and 99 models are trouble prone and the 00's aren't much better.

BTW, how many miles do you have on each? Have you ever had the harmonic balancers changed or failed?

RE: 5 speed gearbox - when?

I bought my '00 430 new and so far after 80,000 km - zero drive train problems. The fit and finish is pathetic and I've had enough stupid problems, but the engine and tranny has never missed a beat.

I have a 500 and I haven't experienced any downshifts due on grades I've encountered so far. The engine is quite powerful.

Re: 5 speed gearbox - when?

Most of the reason why it up shifts and downshifts when it does is because of the adaptive transmission program. I drive very aggressively and the car downshifts just about every time I hit the gas, it knows I like to go fast. But after say my parents drive my car I have the retrain the thing since it up shifts early and doesnt downshift until almost WOT.
