A standard padlock will fit just fine. After the spare is mounted, put a padlock through the hole on the side of the mounting tube. The spare cannot be removed as long as the padlock is in place.

The outside of the lock is corroded but the inner parts are still smooth and fully operational thanks to some WD40 which I regularly spray into/onto the lock. I spray some WD40 on the key as well and then work the lock a few times. Using a padlock is a simple and easy solution ... until you lose the key so keep in mind what Kerr said! DON'T LOSE THE KEY! I never noticed any rattles coming from the padlock but the way I 'tucked' it inside the tube kind of fixates it in place. No matter where I go on or off road the padlock stays put. Give it a go and see what it does. Have fun on your trip and make sure you come back with some nice pictures to share with all of us here on P3. Regards, Rick

That way, when you've left the truck to have new tires put on, and they find the lock and call you, you don't have to go back to the store to give them the key, just tell them where it is. For me I'd have to do something more obvious like attach the key to the bottle jack or something. My problem is always that I HAVE what I need, but forget I have it. I remember cursing myself for not having a 17mm socket wrench in the truck when I needed to change my alternator belt on the road a few months back, and having to go through the extra headache of doing it all with a combination wrench. Well, it turned out I had no less than two different 17mm sockets as well as a ratchet in the truck, I just forgot I had them. -Dave G.

I have made an endless chain, no need for lock and key and has many people ....even younger then me baffled on how to open this endless chain !!! I feed the chain through the pipe and lock it toghether, the locking is basically a little puzzle, simply two "V" cuts in the two chain links! Have a try it's fun! amzimmy (Chain1 (600 x 450).jpg) (Chain2 (600 x 450).jpg) (Chain3 (600 x 450).jpg) (Chain4 (600 x 450).jpg) Attachments ---------------- Chain1 (600 x 450).jpg (58KB - 23 downloads) Chain2 (600 x 450).jpg (57KB - 16 downloads) Chain3 (600 x 450).jpg (52KB - 14 downloads) Chain4 (600 x 450).jpg (59KB - 16 downloads)

Cartmeister Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: need spare tire lock suggestions I just have the $7.99 pack of lugnut locks. They fit nicely and require a "key" nut to remove. Don't have to worry about rust either.

Those lockable lugnuts... Anybody know if the keys are generic? That is, if bought from say, WalMart, could an enterprising thief go to WalMart and buy himself a set and thereby have a magic key to all of them? Or do they just have an unusual head shape? It would be no problem at all for me to mill my bolt heads into say, a square drive and hope the thieves don't have a square socket. Another one, about the padlock... The padlock is nice, but thieves sometimes have boltcutters. Anyone happen to have invented a padlock shield sleeve for themselves? Doc. Newbie owner, newbie here.

It works ok to lub things temporarily, good to clean things, and ok to free up things, but it evaporates and basically leaves nothing behind. As an example, it's used to fit bicycle grips. Spray inside of grip, slide on with ease, let sit, it evaporates, grip doesn't come off. Using it to clean and flush the locks mechanisms is a good idea. Depending on your evironment, letting dry and oiling might save you repeated need for wd-40. I'd recommend this for a rusting environment. For a dry dusty area, might be just as well to just keep cleaning it periodically and not put dusst collecting oil in it.

Locking lugnuts or alternate head shape or whatever. Really, this is a very low-crime place. It's just so much easier to lock something properly than to worry about it. Doc.

That's pretty clever too. PS to the moderator here... Sorry for link to other site. For educational purposes only. Another PS about WD-40. Walberg is right. WD-40 is good for kwik-fix trix, but really is essentially kerosene in a can. When it evaporates, it leaves almost nothing behind, including any form of rust protection or lubrication. To lubricate locks, use graphite.

Spraying it into the lock and then work the lock a few times. In my opinion, if you do this regularly you will prevent the padlock from seizing up. As you can see in my profile I am from the Netherlands and as you might know it rains quite often down here Guess you could say that I live in a 'rust inspiring' environment and for me the WD 40 trick works and has been working okay for the past 6 years. On the same padlock I might add. Guess that different people have different solutions eh!? Regards, NorthseaRoughneck
