Oil for 07 ML320 CDI is unavailable to the public

I called M1 ask if I could buy M1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 229.51 is not available only MB has it. CDI have exhaust filters that could become clogged if this oil is not used. Most engine burn some oil.

I think the specs are so narrow that the only vehicles in the US that would use it are MB vehicles. I think it's one of the few low-ash synthetics out there, but it doesn't meet the API CJ (or even the older CI-4 spec) that most of the diesel pickups would require. I can't imagine many stores would want to carry a product with so narrow a customer base.

So Buy It From Your Dealer!

So why not buy it from your dealer? I get mine from my dealer; and I am "the public". It comes 6 qts/case and cost me $5.25/qt. That's not an unreasonable price.

I think all new ULSD diesel are going to have to use this kind of ESP oil. I just was surprised that I could not go to a store and buy the oil. Its not about price its about being available

It is available. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . at your MBUSA dealer.

My dealer is 45 miles away. I usually buy 6-8 6qt/cases when I go. I get my filters from Duval, since they have the best price.

I have an AMSOIL catalog, and they make oil that meets the same specs.....but it's almost $10 a quart.

It may meet the spec, but it's not on the official list of approved oils.

No. For the 2007 CDI engine it must be Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40.

The ESP stands for Emission System Protection. Not sure what the Formula M means.

If you're having difficulty finding it, guess what, your dealer probably is too. If you're not there to watch the tech change your oil, chances are he's using the Mobil 1 5W-40 diesel oil you can get off the shelf at Walmart.

Dealers aren't having any problems. They are the sole US source for that oil.

I paid $5.25/qt in 6 qt/case lots. Because of the ways it's formulated to protect the CDI diesel particle filters, I would not use it in a gasoline or non CDI diesel engine.
