Karl,

to your images:

pressing on - that's the actual missionary trail (Camino Real)

first puddle - some of the water is actually pretty warm (hot springs), on occasion we have cleaned up in the warm water http://www.4x4abc.com/nette/five.html

Another Gringo Camp - well, the place actually belongs to the local doctor, to survive, he built some huts for tourists there

It's too bad the gals in your photo didn't know to keep the soap out of and well away from a natural stream.

#1 palm trees love soapy water
#2 the water is slightly arsenic and not even the cows drink it
#3 a little soap in a 100 gal/min stream will not kill anything
#4 the production of our beloved G creates more pollutants (not even talking about the exhaust) than two girls cleaning up
#5 we should start a poll "Do you like your woman clean or natural?"
#6 the world is not going under - lets enjoy every day
#7 if we are really serious about saving the planet - lets kill ourselves

Harald,

please remember we are just newbies on those trails and I had to come up with some clever captions - not always an easy task

We also found a little old wooded trail sign (sorry not a picture of it) which said "Camino Real St Borja" and it was very close to St Gertrudis pointing up a almost invisible mountain trail. As you know the Mission St Borja is really far away from that spot. Could that be right?

That water didn't look really inviting to me, so I braved the crossing without wading it by foot first And one of the pools were quite deep

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bg06ElAgstE

- on one side for sure, some tilt & pucker experience - good lesson to learn

I found the "no-soap" solution

Karl,

about water crossings:
always look for alternatives
possibly drive where nobody has been driving before
to drive where everybody drives (like the cows always follow the same track) might prove difficult
think out of the box

looks like you did good so far

RE: Greetings from Hwy 1 Baja California

Karl,

the San Borja trail is real - I have been on it many years ago with a hired local guide
no wonder the Indians did not survive the missionaries (aside from the flue and syphilis) - they had to hand build a road (about 10-12 ft wide) through the entire length of Baja, connecting not only the missions but some working ranchos to supply the needed food
Google Earth is a wonderful tool to search for races of the Camino Real
it has never been traveled in its entirety by anyone - some have tried, none have succeeded
I have found sections over the years - documentation is sparse, but some is available in print

wanna be in the Guinness Book of Records?

Baja is truly one of the last fronteers, even though in places it feels like it has already been overrun - but once outside the populated places its mostly white on the map - love it!

this one is still waiting for you:

20 km on foot roundtrip
or we could make the trail drivable with our G's
would make a neat magazine story

More video from the Baja trip...

This local violin aficionado and singer was filmed directly from the table at a taco dinner in downtown La Paz.

Enjoy!

Methinks this one's especially for you, Karl...as this song was your special request.

Thank you so much, it came came out just great - my favorite Hispanic song - the violin was off just a hair (horse).

Remember this request story started earlier, when we are sitting in a different lunch restaurant and I requested the same song from two different bands - they both turned around and fled the place without playing one song. They might not know the song, but I suspect they couldn't hold that high note as my new buddy did.

Karl

P.S. I was waiting patiently for this treat

Re: Greetings from Hwy 1 Baja California

there is an entire TV series in Mexico about popular songs and modern day mariachi musicians ("La Hija del Mariachi" with close to 200 episodes on youtube). I have noticed that some time ago in La Paz in mariachi concerts myself - everybody is singing along, as every child to grandparents in Mexico knows every word in those songs. It is electrifying to sit among them.
