RE: Baja Expedition for the not-faint-hearted - Spring 2011

After spending the night at one of my favorite places in Loreto and having some Java in the morning, we are on our way home.

Leaving the gorgeous Sea of Cortez behind, we will turn inland after passing through Santa Rosalio later on.

Not easy, to drive away from such a great Baja Adventure.

A big Thank You to Harald, Alan and Eric - what a great team - thanks for all your help and support.

Karl

Wow. It looks like you guys made your own trails out of old washes. I'm looking forward to having time to read more about your adventure and see the pics. Hats off to you guys.

Leave No Trace ?

I hate to have to say it, but what ever happened to "leave no trace" or "take only photos and leave only footprints"? The answer to those questions probably belongs in another thread.

RE: Leave No Trace ?

Good question Dutch - and I think it is legitimate.

I personally think, leaving no trace is a romantic dream - any living being has an impact on its surroundings simply by its existence.

In this case someone has built a road a long time ago. Probably for a nearby mine. So, nature was scarred. We might argue, that we need whatever the mine produces. We might argue, all mines should be outlawed. Apparently the mining company did not maintain the road from some point on. However, local ranchers had started to use it to access land they otherwise could not have (its a hard and primitive life out there). The storm that devastated a portion of the road made it impossible for them to continue accessing their land.
Our "road maintenance" gave them a usable road back. Without waiting for the government to do so. Remember St. Francis and John F. Kennedy: "Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country"
We had, of course, our own interest in mind as well. Aside from creating excitement by doing something unusual, we had to do a bit more road maintenance because of the physical limitations of our G's. We did not want to hurt them. A Jeep on 37" tires could have driven the road quicker and with much less ground work. But we don't have Jeeps with 37" tires.

So, leave no trace is a relative term. Knowing that all our actions will impact nature, we should minimize the traces we leave. No trace is impossible.

RE: Baja Expedition for the not-faint-hearted - Spring 2011

beautiful moment Alan!

I am still cleaning gear and car (dust everywhere) - but I am hungry for the next one.
First 2 weeks of March. No road maintenance planned.

The next "First Time Adventure" will be in April. Just exploring paradise. No fighting to get through involved.

Hard core again next year. I have a few more on the drawing board.

Bout time, geez.
What do you get when you cross a couple electrical/computer engineers, a medical doctor, and another guy (who's just too hard to describe in common terms without using too many words)? Awesome tripnicity!
Thanks for the pics guys.

RE: Leave No Trace ?

Yeah, we were driving on a road that had not been maintained. This was not the Vizcaino preserve or any wilderness or natural area, just a neglected ranch road.

Karl:

When will the bovine skull hood ornament be available? Is the fur optional to match exterior color?

Drew,

its one of those rare ornaments that can't be bought - it needs to be found (few will be so lucky)

however, this one might be available for rent
have it laying in the garden somewhere
for rent in Baja only, as you can't bring it across the border

I have one I found hanging on my fence outside the kitchen window, but she has no horns ... I would not need to rent yours were I with you in Baja as I would just be on the lookout! The photos of the intact ones are quite good, but that one looks to need a patch and a few more PSI of air! Did you see my email from yesterday evening?
