I carry a second spare as well, people have criticized me forhaving too much weight up high, but once you put your spare in use you have no extra!! Is it a spare tire only with tools to change, or tire and rim up there? I carry a second spare as well, people have criticized me forhaving too much weight up high, but once you put your spare in use you have no extra!! Thanks! Depending on the trip, I do carry a second tire (incl. rim) on the roof, yes. But for shorter trips where we do not spend too much time in the outback, I only have the standard spare tire on the back door. I do however always bring a spare tube and tools to fit it in on all trips! This has been sufficient in the last 15 years - we actually haven't had a flat tire in the last 12, even though the tracks were sometimes pretty rough! Knock on wood! But it is certainly better to keep to load on the roof to a strictly necessary minimum. However, even with the spare tire on the roof, I never came anywhere close to a situation where the extra-weight would have made a difference (some folks have a tent, jerrycans, etc. up there)... | ||
