Gouged oil pan

Mercedes Benz of Huntsville Service manager says they're going to fix my oil pan that was not replaced after the harmonic balancer gouged it. No charge. Part of the campaign. I asked today while I was picking up a battery for the ML320. I hope I'm not in for any surprises but they seemed very sure. I've scheduled it to be done next Thursday. I'll keep everyone posted on the outcome.

I found out from Wolfgang, some time ago, that they back tracked and started covering damage caused by the balancer but I've just never had time to get it down there to ask them. I even told them I refused the repair because of the expense and they said it didn't matter. Joey, the service manager said that if it was damaged by the harmonic balancer and is leaking, they'll replace it. I was assuming since I had refused the repair, even before the balancer recall, that they wouldn't do anything.

RE: Gouged oil pan

Here's a pic of the harmonic balancer and the huge gouge. I pryed off the JB weld that was filling it and I didn't have to do much prying. So much oil had gotten behind it, it just fell off.

RE: Gouged oil pan

MB of Huntsville said that the oil pan is NOT leaking. However, two front seals and the oil filler seal is leaking and it is going to be $342.00 + tax for repair. I'm really tired of oil getting slung all over the engine compartment so I hope this fixes it.

$342 to repair that seems like a very good price. I assume this will be done in the process of installing a new oil pan. Installing the new pan or even the gasket is very expensive. By now your engine bay must be a big mess!!! I'm glad they'll do it for you, as they should. It just makes sense that if a recalled item caused related damage, ALL the damages should be fixed. The problem usually is how to determine what damage exactly was caused by the recalled part and some shops may just not want to go into all that work. Keep us posted.

It is my understanding that they have to remove the harmonic balancer to 'fix' the front seal. However, I inspected this myself two nights before (I have a picture!) and I can tell you with certainty, that I seen no oil leaking anywhere around the front seal. But if they already had it down for inspection, I guess it would have been dumb not to replace the seal if it was right there. What I can't understand, and I intend to ask the service manager when I get there today, WHY it was important for them to spend my money 3 years ago on a new idler pulley, harmonic balancer and oil pan. But, now, when it's THEIR money, it's all of a sudden not so important to replace that same oil pan, now. They insisted 3 years ago it was leaking and I refused the repair because I felt I was being 'had'. This now confirms that I was right all along that they tried to screw me. They are refusing to fix the oil pan because they say it wasn't leaking. A direct contradiction to what they said over 3 years ago when the incident first happened. This is going to be fun getting an explanation for this 180.
