4x4abc Date registered: Apr 2006 Location: La Paz, Baja California, Mexico Vehicle(s): 02 G500 | Death Valley G-Adventures October 2008 I am in the process of putting together our October G-Adventure. Death Valley is a true dream destination. It offers hundreds of miles of dirt roads, very remote canyons, salt lakes, snow covered mountains, the lowest point in the US, historic sites, enormous dunes, hot springs, petroglyphs, Charly Manson's hideout, darn hot weather - and some demanding off-road spots. To allow the guys with more time to see much of what Death Valley has to offer I have the days from Oct 1 to Oct 12 set aside. For the interested workaholics a weekend participation is planned. For oversees participants it should be possible to hitch a ride with some of us. I am open for all suggestions. A participation in non G and rentals should be OK. So, contact me off board to tell me what you would like to do/see and whether you are interested in participating - if so, how many days, how many people etc : adventure@4x4abc.com http://4x4abc.com/4WD101/calendar8.html saludos Harald Edited by 4x4abc 2/8/2008 10:41 PM (dv.jpg) Attachments ---------------- dv.jpg (246KB - 12 downloads)

4x4abc Date registered: Apr 2006 Location: La Paz, Baja California, Mexico Vehicle(s): 02 G500 | Re: Death Valley G-Adventures October 2008 one of the must visit places are the Eureka Dunes - tallest sand dune in California (almost 800 feet) the hike up is very strenuous, but unusually rewarding: the dunes are "singing". An absolutely unreal experience. Sounds like a prop plane. Getting down is fast and easy. A snow board would be best. http://www.schweich.com/sbdA.html (dunes.jpg) (down.jpg) Attachments ---------------- dunes.jpg (197KB - 7 downloads) down.jpg (155KB - 7 downloads)

I have attached some shots from various past trips. I usually go to Death Valley about 3 times/year. I can usually make it there in about 4.5hrs from my house, which makes it doable on most 3 or 4 day weekends for me. The brothel and jail photos from a nearby ghosttown of Rhyolite, Nevada :-) Cheers, Leon 4x4abc - 2/8/2008 10:36 PM I am working on a new web site to provide all the information about this trip - maybe also a blog or forum so the interested G owners can communicate: http://4x4abc.com/G-Class/Death.Valley Edited by SocalAstro 2/10/2008 11:48 AM (DV_dunes.JPG) (DV_BadwaterBasin.JPG) (Brothel.JPG) (jail.JPG) Attachments ---------------- DV_dunes.JPG (65KB - 7 downloads) DV_BadwaterBasin.JPG (101KB - 8 downloads) Brothel.JPG (78KB - 8 downloads) jail.JPG (68KB - 8 downloads)

If it would be possible to join for one week, that would be about right for us. Getting to DV and back from the Pacific Nord West adds another week of travel and stops along the way. I have been to DV three times. It is a superior experience and the heat is therapeutic! I like the site that you have started since it seems that you will take care of permits and the like, and you have a category that will cover things to bring. Good idea. tom

4x4abc Date registered: Apr 2006 Location: La Paz, Baja California, Mexico Vehicle(s): 02 G500 | RE: Death Valley G-Adventures October 2008 I'll be delighted to cook - but we might run into trouble with that the county (Eldorado) approached me last year to apply for a restaurant permit since they noticed on my Rubicon web site that I am cooking for all So I have to provide three sink dish washing, restrooms for my employees (what employees?), thermometer for food, professional gas stove, etc etc etc love our government - too many paper pushers Death Valley is pretty nasty with permits as well (had to jump through hoops, including getting the governor involved, when I did the permits for the last big event) - so, I'll not publish any cooking offers. And the Ranger will flag you down when he sees more than 3 cars in a group. They know me by now and I can't claim, we just met by accident.

The fifth gear in my Gwagen is for when I have no choice but to take an interstate. Interstate highways are colorless, and an intellectual wasteland (see T.S. Ellott)..., so, I really prefer to take black or blue line roads whenever I can. If I want to get somewhere guickly, I take the BMW with a radar detector. I have made it to the East Coast in 3 days, but if I were fitted with a catheter and take stay awake drugs, I could maybe do it faster. But, why do that to myself when on holiday. My life is way too stressful as it is. Life is not NASCAR. So, the places we will stop along the was include friends and relatives...never more than a short stay, perhaps a meal, good wine, and off we go. I always plan on being an easy guest...and if I know that I am doing the cooking, I bring fresh salmon in the cooler, and make a sauce that even I think is out of this world. (I also do real German cooking, my neigbors generally line-up at the door at our annual open house (Jan 1st) when this is on the menu.) MRE's are fine for the trail, as long as the water, wine, or beer is slightly chilled. In the desert - wrap in a damp cloth and allow the dry air to create cooling. Cheers!
