Hi Dutch,

One of the reasons I own a Gwagen is to slow down.

Tom, We obviously have different philosophies of travel. When I want to get somewhere, even the old 280GE was capable of 80+ mph travel, hour after hour after hour. The Interstate is the means to get there; and getting there quickly is what I seek.

The gears change upon arrival.

Different strokes.

RE: Death Valley G-Adventures October 2008

Titus,

I have no idea about driving times. Depends. On a lot of things.
Try to make it to DV. Its an unusual place few people know. Many tourists visit - but very few will get to see what we will be seeing.
Some of the "roads" are on no map. Enchanting places. Disturbing places. Rough. Life threatening. Vision Quest.
No wonder most religious founders came back with their messages after a stay in the desert. Out there its just you and the universe.
Nothing to do. Nothing to see (for the untrained eye). If you are not strong in yourself - you'll run home screaming.
I have had to set participants on the bus home because they could not stand the quiet.
Drown the quiet with your iPod and you might as well watch the Nature Channel.
The desert changed my life. My intention is to make it accessible for the curious.

One of the places we'll visit, the Saline Valley hot springs, are the spot in California farthest away from any paved road.

We'll have it easy with our capable and dependable vehicles - imagine the early explorers on foot 150 years ago. Awesome!
I found the escape route those early settlers, who gave Death Valley its name, took to get out. Not on the map. Stunning drive!

Enough advertising.
Come if you can. Regret it if you can't.

Harald,

this looks like a great trip; thanks for organizing it. I haven't figured out if I'll be able to swing it yet but I know I'll regret it if I can't.

Tom,

make the run from Kansas City to Denver (and back) a few times and then let me know how you feel about fifth gear. I think Dutch will know what I'm talking about. No offense to anyone in the area! But it is, well, expansive.

RE: Death Valley G-Adventures October 2008

Bruce,

Don't get me wrong, I love speed. I live fast every day in my work and often am at on the job 12-14 hours and more. Weekends can be consumed by events or official gatherings that I need to attend. So, the most important thing for survival is to know when four forward gears are plenty - a methaphor.

The photos of Death Valley are exciting, and it would be a great way to meet some of the people here. Looking at the schedule on Harald's webpage, we can do 6-7 days.

Harald - I have been to the Saline warm springs twice, both times in February.....great place to spend a week or so, depending on the crowd......both times driving a Chevy AWD Astro van...think i would enjoy it more with my G.

Hi Harald!

Please add me to your list. I've been going back to DV almost every year since you introduced me to it in 2000. I'd love to catch up.

Do we really want to know where he is located? Just look - he's still wearing that awful jacket....

Hi Harald,

I'm just a lurker and don't own a G currently. My current lease expires next Feb. and I'm hoping to pick up a G then. Fingers crossed....

So I'll be driving an LR3...sorry.

RE: Death Valley G-Adventures October 2008

Harald,

Mom has been on my ass that I need a vacation as of late. Told her I can't take any time off as I need to work to pay off all these repairs on the 280 . However, this sounds like the exactly what I need, so perhaps I should pack the car and throw the brother in the passenger seat and join you! Always wanted to see DV.

To October!
