G's in Tuscaloosa, AL

Here are seven of them all in a row. Parked at the restaurant for dinner. Pretty cool!

Re: G's in Tuscaloosa, AL

Nice look surely. I can only imagine how confused the other guest might be First they think that why they haven't seen Jeep model like that before. And now there's apparently seven owners accidentaly got to the same restaurant Have a nice convention anyway

More Pictures

Since the Vance Assembly Plant was started up by many former Daimler-Benz Gwagen personnel, it warmed more than a few hearts to see all these G's parked in front of the Visitor Center.

1 = 10 G's in front of the Visitor Center.

2 = The Group in front of the Visitor Center.

4 = 5 G's in front of the Vance Plant Main Entrance.

3 = The Group in the Main Plant Atrium before going back into the plant, where photos were not allowed. Damned shame, too!

Thank you Heinz 90 for all of your work in putting the SE G-Treffen plant tour together!!

The off-road course didn't look that challenging...
Did you guys learn anything unique or outstanding about the new GL?

SE G-treffen thanks

I would like to say a quick thank-you to those who helped make this weekend's treffen a success: Heinz, for the red carpet treatment we received at MBUSI; Dutch, for planning/coordinating the event; Sean and Steve for the hospitality at the shop today (including lunch and raffle goodies)!

It was great to make some new G friends in 3-D and to put a few faces with names. Looking forward to doing it again...provided I can keep my junk running!

RE: SE G-treffen thanks

I second that. Well organized, great to put the faces to the names.

It was great to meet Heinz and talk about his years of G experience as well as pulling some strings to provide the G's VIP front row parking. Tuscaloosa will never be the same.

Thanks to Dutch for orchestrating the event.

To Sean and Steve for providing a great venue for the brotherhood of G's to eat, congregate and exchange stories.

Additionally it was great having the engineers at the plant join us, good folks.

Also thanks to our long distance traveler Tomo for making it to the Treffen from Japan. That is G-dedication.

And finally to Damon for making it a 2 G convoy all to way back to Atlanta. With his G55 begging to take off and 300GD begging to take a break it was a relaxing journey. A true Turtle and the Hare scenario.

RE: SE G-treffen thanks

I can only add my thanks to Heinz 90 for setting up our visit to Vance. Touring 3,000,000 square feet of plant under roof and being welcomed by the President of MBUSI was really pretty neat for a bunch of MB's "bastard step child" (the Gwagen) owners.

Sean and Steve did a great job with their Open House; and we got to meet a few more G owners, who couldn't make it for the plant tour.

Thank you to Karl of G-Wagen Accessories for the T-shirts; and finally, a big tanks to all who attended. Y'all were a great group! Thanks for being there and helping make it a success!!

Additional Treffin stuf......

I too had pictures that I wanted to share.
I have pics of Heinz and a few of the group.
I also was wondering if anyone took note of the miles driven and the fuel that they used.
I will post mine here and wish to hear from the other folks.
The trip meter showed a total miles driven 1177
The fuel reciepts indicated a total of 73.4 gallons of fuel used.
If my calculator is correct, that is just slightly over 16 miles per gallon.
A comment is necessary about a delay we encountered in Atlanta.
We got stuck in rush hour traffic on Firday evening for over an hour and traveled a distance of less than 5 miles during that time.
I am not too sure how much that delay hurt the milage, but I am sure it had some effect.
The the "brick in the wind" effect on the last leg of the trip was tiresome!
Before adding the two pics I have that includes the one of Heinz, I would like to say all of the effort that Dutch put into getting us together was much appreciated.
The plant tour was impressive, the evening meals were a great get together, and Sean made the trip ending a good meet.
For those of you that missed the fun of meeting the group, the tall guy in the pic is Heinz....

Seems like a great time was had by all. The test track with the GL seemed interesting ? Did it make you consider a GL...maybe as a second car ?

Yes. I rode in both the ML and the GL on the track; and the GL was a very nice ride. However, the off road package is only offered in the gassers, not in the GL320CDI (stupid MBUSA Marketing!!); and the fuel economy in the diesel is 135% better than the gassers. That nixed any further consideration. I'll keep my ML320CDI.

Of interest is the fact that all the ML's on the test track ride were European or Rest of the World models, because the Off Road package is not offered on any of the the ML models for the North American market. Another MBUSA Marketing heads in very dark places decision.

I think that it's funny that all of the vehicles are made here, and that you cannot go to the factory and request what you want on it.

RE: G's in Tuscaloosa, AL

Hello all!

Got home today from the SE Treffen! We had a great time. Thanks off course to Dutch and Heinz for the effort!
It was great meeting some folks from the forum finally and some other G enthusiasts also.

Here are a couple of my pictures that can't rival Dutch's for clarity.

We were "very" impressed by the capability of the ML550 w/the offroad package that we road on the Vance test course. Lots of fun!

I'm no off roader really but I thought the course would have stumped many lesser vehicles.

Also thanks to our great enthusiastic test driver Anthony, a quality control engineer at the plant! He really did an excellent job of demonstrating and explaining the technology behind the capability of our vehicle.

Jonathan

I may start another thread to describe the trials and tribulations of an old G hastily prepared for a 1200 mile journey! Some of you know what I mean others will soon know!

I was also amazed when I heard this. So I asked our test driver, Ritchie, and he confirmed that was the case last year, but he thought he hear they may have changed the US options for this year. So, just as we were leaving the factory lobby at the end of the event, he came running up and told us he had just asked those that know, and that the ML off-road package is now available for the US market, and that it specifically included the low-range, adjustable suspension, center and rear diff locks. He didn't elaborate on Diesel or Gasoline or other engine options. It's what he said anyway, FWIW.

True for the GL gassers; but, if so for the ML's now, the MBUSA Build Your Own webpage doesn't know anything about it. I just looked there again - no ORP for either diesel or gasser ML.

And why were all of the ML's on that test course R-O-W models?

RE: G's in Tuscaloosa, AL

If it's any consolation, I've wondered for years why Toyota has similarly provided their "best" (at least to my way of thinking) off-roader platforms to the ROW but not the U.S.

Maybe Daimler will come around on the U.S. spec ML.
