Colorado San Juans &/or N. Arizona &/or S. Utah

I'm starting to give some thought to a trip to the places listed in the Subject line sometime at the end of August or early September. Nothing definite yet, but giving it some initial mulling around.

If you have any interest in coming along, let's talk about it here.

Dutch,

I would like to explore the San Juan's, dirt/gravel mountain passes and camp out up there.

Maybe early enough this year so the snow wouldn't keep us off the mountains - like the other time.....

Have you been up Taylor or Scofield (?) pass? Its in the Crested Butte, CO area, going into Aspen/Marble, CO

On the other hand, I'm open to other inputs for sure.......just any good reason to get away

The two that I am most interested in are Imogene Pass and Governor's Basin. Both are between Ouray and Telluride; and both are prone to early snow closure. Brent says that sometime in August is the best time to ensure that there's no snow closure; but I would much prefer to wait until after the kids are back in school to reduce the amount of traffic on those trails.

Dutch,

the Quray, Silverton and Telluride areas are always worth driving through, have never been on a dirt road pass up there - it would be spectacular I do believe.

Maybe Dave G. can join us........people think he needs to get out of the house more often

I'll pencil in the early part of September......

That would be the latest with any kind of assurance that those high trails would still be open. I know that Danny Gork has also been making noises about wanting to go.

The other place I'd like to go back to is the Maze District of Canyonlands NP. That is most definitely not a day trip.

I hope you guys can come through Santa Fe, I should be living there then, I love showing my home town to friends.

If work permits it I would love to see the canyon lands again.

I will be in CO around that time to see Dave and Q, and hopefully I will be able to explore Moab then too.

I am definitely interested. I too would like to do Imogene, etc. In September 2006, the trails were already snowed in. I actually drove the Imogene trail from the Ouray side until I hit the snow. It's very beautiful out there. I also set up camp at the Alta Lakes on the other side near the Telluride Mountain Village. That is a beautiful area as well.

Dutch and I have both expressed interest in the Maze area. It would take more planning and prep, but might also be a consideration.

Danny

Labor Day is Sept 1 this year. Many times in the past, I would use the Labor Day weekend to make the drive to UT and/or AZ; and when I got there, most folks with kids had already gone home so they can get them in school.

This early Labor Day weekend might just be a way to beat the snow in the high passes of the San Juans. After a couple of days there, we could head over to the Maze. The Flint Trail in the Maze is a real trip!

Dutch,

Labor Day is just a couple days early this year........I would try to leave before or during that weekend and stay for next whole week in that target area.

The San Juan & Moab area are more enticing to me than the AZ's Marlboro Country.

How do you plan to camp out (without the Kamping Trailer)? Under the G-wagen or in the Best Western.......?

The Maze District has no Best Westerns. I have a tent from the days previous to the Kamper.

Looks Like the First Two Weeks in September

Initial planning looks like my schedule will to be out there the first two weeks of September. Will probably leave Atlanta and drive on Labor Day weekend to arrive in the Colorado San Juans on Monday, Labor Day evening, 1 Sept.

If the snows haven't shut things down, I plan to do Imogene Pass and Governor's Basin trails. Then over to Utah for a couple of days in the Maze District of Canyonlands National Park.

The rest of the time is still subject to further planning. I may have my US Army step son with me. He will be just home from Korea and between postings to Ft Gordon, GA and then on to Ft Lewis, WA; and he would like to see the Grand Canyon while we are in the "vicinity". We have to head back to Georgia in time for him to report at Ft Gordon on 15 Sept.

We will be camping most of the time. If you want to join us, step forward.

RE: Looks Like the First Two Weeks in September

Ok Dutch,

I'm signing on......would leave here on Sunday night which gets me comfortable into the Quray side of the mountains.
Not able to spend 2 weeks out there like you, but still have plenty of time to explore the passes & plateaus.

Down the line we can come up with a meeting point, let's see who likes to join and we go from there.

I had an email from Erwin in Texas yesterday. He is interested in participating, but probably not for the entire two weeks either.

RE: Colorado San Juans &/or N. Arizona &/or S. Utah

Guys, I am going to keep this in mind. I would not be able to do the two weeks either, but I'd rather join the San Juan portion of the trip as it is only a matter of a few hours north of me. I gather the first week would be best for that, right? I would need to bring my then 20 month old daughter who hates being in the car, so I think 2 weeks would be out of the question. I look forward to this as, believe it or not, I have very little experience with the San Juan trails for living so close. It would be a perfect way to meet you guys and experience the trails. Would you guys mind/ laugh if my friend in his Nissan came along? -James

The tentative plan is to arrive in the San Juans during the evening of Monday, Sept 1 (Labor Day). If the weather is good, I would plan to camp. Where is yet to be determined.

Tuesday do Imogene from Telluride to Ouray. Camp on Yankee Boy Road. Wednesday do Governor's Basin. Thursday to Moab or Green River and stay in a hotel to shower.

Fri, Sat & Sun in the Maze District of Canyonlands N.P. This will also mandate camping.

The rest of my week is still up in the air. If my Army step son is with me, we'll probably head down into AZ and visit the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

If your 20 month old hates being in the car, it doesn't sound like a very good trip for her. Just my opinion.

I should be availible to run some trails in the Ouray area when you guys are here. Unless I get really lucky, I will likely be G-less still but will have a Jeep GC that is going to be capable enough to participate.

That said, the Nissan wont get laughed at any more than the Jeep

That's 7 vehicles tentatively, so far.

A Video from The Maze District

Looks like they did this when there was still snow on the ground.

The following gives a pretty good description of how to get there:
