Karl Hgwy 12 doesn't go anywhere near Canyonlands N.P.; but it does go through some pretty country. A very nice track (probably a road now) goes east from Boulder through Capitol Reef N.P. It's called the Burr Trail. Used to be almost impassable in places when wet, but was very isolated and scenic. The county got into a pi**ing match several years ago with the environmentalists and the BLM, and decided to make sure that they kept their rights to it as a county road (CR-1668); so they paved a large portion - if not all - of it. I do plan to get back country permits for The Maze. Just need to set the itinerary a little firmer in stone.

Can't wait to get back there....... Karl I do plan to get back country permits for The Maze. Just need to set the itinerary a little firmer in stone. Backcountry permits for The Maze cost $30.00; and are limited to a maximum of 9 people and 3 vehicles. We may have to split up.

Karl/Fernweh & I are two (2). First come on the 3rd one. Let me know soonest if you are sure you want it. If we go above three, it will require another permit; and these are $30 each (for up to three vehicles) in addition to the entrance fee per vehicle for the park. It will be important, based on limited availability, to get any additional permits as early as possible. There is an on-line reservation form that can be faxed to the Park Service. Let me know if you want the links. Also, this will require at least one, and probably more like two, 5 gallon jerries of gasoline on top of a full tank when leaving Green River, UT in order to get from and back to a gasoline station. You will also need plenty of water and an in vehicle porta pottie to carry out all of your waste. There are no, as in zero, nada, none facilities of any kind in The Maze District. This will be a great high desert experience. Heck, I'm ready to go right now. It's been 23 years since I slept at the Maze Overlook.

Utah OK guys, I took a few shots of the Angel Creek campground on the Yankee Boy Basin Rd (Cty 361) just south of Ouray. This is the first camping area you come to on that road. There are a few spots right on the river but close to the road. Back in through the trees there are a bunch of choices from grassy open areas to spots back in the pines. Sort of a something for everyone place, though no bathrooms. They may have porta potties by the road, they have in the past, or, bring a shovel If that is too rough for you, I just listed a fellow G owners home in the area, just 1/2 a mile from the camping area. Shameless plug I know but who wouldn't want to live here? Utah Just some addition pictures to wet your whistle These were last weekend, taken from the falls on the Yankee Boy Basin Road. Three look towards Governors Basin, I love the spires on the one ridgeline, and the old miners house seems amazingly intact. Many of the structures I have visited so far this year have been badly damaged over the winter by the extreme amount of snow we had. The one shot is looking into Governors Basin itself. You can see the 4wd trail still snowed in zig zagging its way up the knoll in the foreground. The waterfall pic shows just how much snowpack is still melting, the rivers are raging and the waterfalls are everywhere. There is still a tremendous amount of snow! Brent Expert Date registered: Apr 2006 Location: SW Colorado USA Vehicle(s): '13 Wolfsburg GTI Posts: 1754 | RE: Colorado San Juans &/or N. Arizona &/or S. Utah That video should be titled, "Why I don't own a CJ" What a squeaky old pile! They are trying to drive entirely the wrong line up that obstacle. Going up the crack just begs for body damage, or in this case they appear to be looking to damage humans too! The G will drive right up all four of the routes through that area. It is the most challenging spot in the San Juans for the most part. Further up that trail is a challenging longer climb and prior to that spot there is a difficult short one but they have all been done repeatedly with my G30 on ORC springs and 285/75-16s. There is real rocker bashing rock crawling in Montrose up the road. I have never been there because I am not a fan of body damage. Not sure how extreme it gets. Poughkipsee is definately fun though, I used to refer to that area in the video as my playground. I would hang out and play for hours and watch yo-yos like the people in the vidoe try and surmount the obstacles. Then I would run the grocery getter looking G up and down making it all look easy.

I look foreward to doing more with you guys in Sept. I can't think of a better way to spend the 4th! Brent, I looked for you in Ouray, I didn't know you sold the hotel. Sorry I would have droped a line to see if you wanted to join me, but the trip up to Telluride was improptu. -James

Let me know; and I'll give you the specifics of the permit; so you can get the same spots.
