You know what might be fun? If you guys will have an HF radio in the group, setup for NVIS and make a contact schedule to get on the radio once or twice.

-Dave G.

Best I can do is to have a hand held set to an FRS or a GMRS channel.

And I only can offer a dual band radio with a FRS/GMRS mod, but still working on an antenna issue......

Looks like we'll need to pick a GMRS channel when we meet in Ouray.

I put in an E-mail to the CNP rangers to see if any of the SEUT repeaters are accessable from within the Maze, or lacking that, what's the best way to make radio contact with official agencies from within the Maze.  Good info to have.  I'll let you know what they say.

Finally had time to read through the details of all your dates.  Looks like we'll miss each other by a week or so.  Tentative plan right now is to meet at Goosenecks of the San Juan around 9/14 and go from there for a week.  We're targeting SE Utah so looking to go a little later to ease the heat and we don't have your concerns of snow in the mountains.  Dutch might remember Jamie and John coming from SoCal, and I'll have an additional passenger coming with me in the G.

That said, anyone who might be coming through Denver is welcomed to stop by.  Give me a shout.

Yes Dutch,

you just need to pick a channel, maybe a back-up channel as well and I find out what frequency it is.......in advance, so we don't have to google it again while on the trail - and Desertstar might be not around

Alan gave me a nice frequency list and I always wanted to laminate it and have it in the truck, but.......

I have a list of the channels and frequencies, and will have it with me on the trip.

By chance, does anyone have a set of front and or rear turn signal guards they would want to sell?

You might want to post this query in the main G-Class Forum, where there's more traffic. Also in the Want To Buy Forum, although that get probably even less traffic.

Denver Has Coldest Aug 17 EVER!

I hope that doesn't portend anything for the San Juans in two weeks.

There is nowhere I am aware of to buy firewood in Ouray. There is a sawmill operation in Montrose to the north that sells cut and split pine in bulk. I think that just spending a little time in the woods would produce a pretty good amount of wood. I used to just go into the ampitheater area above town with a chainsaw and cut deadfall on forest service land. Technically this requires a permit but I and many others have done it for years without. If you have room for a chainsaw, you could fill a MOG in a couple of hours...ask me how I know

Due to my work schedule, I am going to have to pick a day if I am going to be able to join you fine folks. I made the suggestion to DUTCH via email about the possibility of doing a Black Bear Pass to Telluride and back to Ouray trail day. Many have a fear about Black Bear but truely it is not a difficult trail. I did it in a stock JGC on 28" tires just a few weeks ago. The views are worth the switchbacks coming into town Monday, Tues, or Wed all work fine for me and I am completely free Sunday the 31st for any and all exploring.

For the Imogene portion I would probably prefer to leave the Jeep behind. Unfortunately in a crappy real estate market I haven't managed to close a sale that would allow me to lift the Jeep and fit decent tires or buy back into the G realm. So I am looking to hitch a ride if possible

I'd love to do Black Bear if possible. I will be there Mon evening and would need to head home Friday afternoon at the latest. My buddy is joining us in his FJ Cruiser. We had discussed the Alpine Loop toward the end of the week. I know some of you are continuing on to Moab earlier in the week though, so let's be sure to hit the trails talked ab out early, and then focus on some others for wed- fri possibly. I'll buy wood on my way up to get us through a few nights at least. -James

Brent,

I always have a seat for you, and I try to make it into Quray on Saturday night or early Sunday morning, 8-31-08.

With my limited suspension travel I'm ready for any fine smooth asphalt paving.....

Karl, you are in luck, CDOT has repaved most of Hwy 550 up on the pass, smooth as a baby's bottom. It should be perfect for you and your "lifted for street looks" G500

Hi Brent, Perhaps you could check the Mountain Market in Ridgeway. I have seen small bundles of firewood for sale there before. They usually keep it stacked by the front door.

Also, for any one coming up from ABQ, there is a place in Cuba, NM that sells wood out of their front yard. They are in town, right on the east side of US550. I have always wanted to stop to pick up some mesquite, but the car usually is packed so tight it looks like the Beverly Hillbilly's are moving to town and firewood never makes the priority list.

Finally, as Brent mentions there is LOTS of wood just laying around. Due to the record snows this past winter there were multiple avalanche runs. Attached is a picture that was taken, in May, just south of the Camp Bird Mine. Not sure what the Rangers would think of you just going up and cutting, without a permit. However, I would imagine that you might be able to forage stuff lying on the ground.

Sorry I am going to miss the fun. Post lots of pictures.....

Thanks Brent,

it looks like my day-time job work scope will relieve me from the duties as planned, I'm getting slowly ready to pack my good looking highway cruzer, attach all the bolt-on gadgets, fill up the main tank (what's the fuel cost now in Montrose?), air up the tire to highway travel pressure, check all the fluids (in engine and cooler) and should be in God's Country by next Saturday evening.

Can't wait to feel the cool night breeze again and to sleep under the star spangled night sky......

I might even have my tires detailed with that shiny stuff before riding into town

See you guys up there,

Karl

Regular unleaded is around $3.87/gal right now and seems to be holding. It is probably 20 cents a gallon more in Ridgway and I think around $4.20 in Ouray.

Brent,

do you have the coordinates from the Angel Creek campground, Topo 7.0 doesn't have it listed.

It must be somewhere up CR 361 just out of Quray - maybe at the confluence of Angel Creek and Canyon Creek?

Perhaps not perfectly exact, but these will get you there.

Angel Creek
N38 00.484 W107 41.418
8398 ft

Here's a link. Says it has restrooms and costs $12/nite.
