Engine Temperature

Hi All!

What temperature should the engine be running at. Around 80 on the temperature gauge?


Mine has been creeping up to 100 lately under normal road usage. Coolant level etc ok.

Anything else I can look for as to why its going up to 100?

100 is bad right?

It would help if you said which engine you had, that way ML owners with the same engine can give you a directly applicable answer.

My ML (270CDi) gets to 85 degrees or sometimes 90 if I am driving hard in very hot weather but sticks at 80 in the winter.

As to why it is hot is another question. Is the fan stuck? Is anything blocking the radiator? Has any maintenance been done recently just before the problem began? Has the fan fuse blown? (a common fault on earlier ML's I believe).

Please let us know what the problem was when it has been fixed.

its an ml320 april 2001

its happened since i had a B service.

Fans not sticking blocked etc.

collant level ok.

If 95-100 is ok for the engine then i won't worry, But thats what i want to find out. Its obviously gotten hotter here but its the UK so hot here is cold elsewhere!! about 21 degrees here.

Winter it was always around 80 on the gauge.

Ive cheked fuses to air conditioning fan and it was blown, F44 fuse, but that was a month ago.

What fuse are you talking about?

I would check the list in the fusebox and check any fuses that might have anything to do with the engine, fans, etc.

If the problem started directly after the B service then I would go back to the dealer and get them to check it. I don't have a 320 so I don't have much more idea.

Mine runs at about 90 in city traffic. It goes down to about 85 on the highway.

i think hopefully, i am overworrying.

its my first summer with my baby(ml)!

just one question to anyone reading this thread, i think the main radiator fan may be running not as strong as it should be.

so it is running but not flying around like an aeroplane propellor kind of speed.

what, if anything could be causing this?

welcome to the forum.

yup, this vehicle is unusual, to me anyway. the engine temp in summertime, with ac on and towing can go as high as 100-C. and thats supposed to be ok. (?)every other car i have owned would warm up to one temp and stay there, if everything was working correctly. but, it seems, this thing can be anywhere between 80 and 100-C and its ok.(?)

there is a fluid clutch on the fan that is turned by the fan belt. its supposed to dis-engage above 2500 rpm (i think), and engage more agressively if the engine get very hot. bi-metal strip on the front of the clutch. and, engage less if the weather is cold.
