hack tht Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | New catalytic converter required on my 2000 ML320... options As some of you know we have 2 pipes coming off of the engine. One each pipe there are 3 catalytic converters inline, and not individually replaceable. The element inside the first catalytic converter on the driver side is rattling around in the housing. I checked at an exhaust shop and they didn't want to try to cut the old one out and just replace it, clearance looked tight. They want $900 installed, and the dealer wants $1040 installed. The rest of the cats are fine, just this one needs to be replaced. Has anyone attempted to just replace one of the cats? Is it somewhat easy to remove the driver side exhaust pipe. Thought maybe if I took it down and had someone then cut and install the catalytic converter in place I could save some $$$. Figured just replacing the one cat would be a $200-$300 item, vs. $900 whole new pipe. If I have to, I will spend the $900, just would like to replace the actual broken item rather then the whole thing. Thoughts? (I am posting this on the other 2 MB forums I browse, sorry if this is a repost, just wanted max exposure)

There is a recall for these cats for busted welds. Have your VIN checked. BTW, there are only 2 cats on each line. The third is an exhaust can. If you find you have to replace all of them, try this: http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/mmp/mercedes~ml320~catalytic_converter~parts.html

Tone Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: New catalytic converter required on my 2000 ML320... options My front driver's side cat had come apart outside of the warranty period so I replaced both front cats with these Magnaflow HiFlo Metalic ones and removed the secondary ones since they are not monitored by O2s. ML runs much better and these were only $100 ea plus install and were almost the exact size as what was removed. Beats the $1400 a side from the stealer. Be sure to verify which type cat you have using the info on their web page - http://www.car-sound.com/02product/displayuniversal.asp?universal=59958
