Gurgling rattle from 1998 ML320?

Can you help me to identify the cause of a strange noise coming from my 1998 ML320 (with 77,000 miles)? The sound occurs when in any gear except park or neutral. Whether or not the brakes are applied seems to make no difference. I hear it when traveling from zero to 10 miles per hour, when under little or no load (torque). It is kind of a rattling gurgle. When we pull into the garage with windows open it is so loud that we have to raise our voices.

I would also appreciate advice on whether to take it to a local mechanic or long distance to a Mercedes dealer.

Thank you!

That's going to be hard to pin down if we can't actually see the truck. But, here are possibilities:

If it's a loud clicking that you hear best when traveling very slow, that could be the transfer case.

If the sound you're describing is a gurgling sound while it's idling or traveling slowly, that could be the catalytic converter(s).

I would also check the center drive shaft support bearing. If you can wiggle the drive shaft any amount in a lateral fashion it could very well be the support bearing.

It is right near the connection of the two drive shaft sections.

Apparently you were right about the catalytic converter -- we took it to the dealer, they replaced the catalytic converter, intermediate mid bearing, belt tensioner and belt. Now it is nice and quiet.
