Anyone else having trouble with the Gear Shifter?

The shutter broke on the gear shifter on the ML430 a couple of years ago. I had to fish out pieces of broken plastic with stats. Now, today, it jams up again, in drive. The pin that holds the gear shift knob shaft onto the selector mechanism backed out, jamming it. I managed to align the pieces and push the pin back in and it seems to be fine. I think MB needs to go back on the drawing board with the gear shifter.

RE: Anyone else having trouble with the Gear Shifter?

Had to take my E in a couple months ago for similar problem. Thank goodness it wasn't too expensive to fix.

Re: Anyone else having trouble with the Gear Shifter?

The other day, I had a somewhat different problem on my '01 ML270CDI.

Sometimes it apparently didn't register that I had put it into gear, and the up-/downshift didn't work.

I turned off the engine, took out the key and then started up again. Then everything worked as it should... I.e. Electrical gremlin instead of a mechanical malfunction.

I took my shifter apart to repair a "touchy" TouchShift. Here's the documentation I wrote up when I did that. It should help if you need to get to the dust shutter (even on the MY99 that lacks TouchShift).

Thanks for the tutorial!

Where you been, man? Just because you don't own a W163 doesn't mean you can't slip in occasionally.

My 99 is coming apart at the seams. The power window switch is shot (yeah, I tried fixing it, no dice), I need 4 O2 sensors, a radiator and two hoses along with taking it in for the power steering hose recall, AGAIN (that's 3 times!). Plus, while I have it down for the radiator, I'm changing the tranny fluid and filter. Even doing it myself, it's going to top $1200 in parts and such.
