So I was in a restaurant at lunch today and the manager saw my Mercedes key fob for my 2007 ML320 CDI. So he hands me this Mercedes key fob that looks exactly like mine, with the same dealer tag on it that i had and says "Here, take this and see if it works." Of course I knew it wouldn't work and I explained why, but he told me it had been there for 2 months or more and didn't want to hold on to it anymore since nobody came back for it. (Which is odd in itself). So I hit the idiot button for telaid and tried to see if I could find out what or who it belonged to. They informed me that only the dealer could do that...all the way in Columbia, SC. My question is this. If I never find the owner of this key, do I have to take it to the dealer to reprogram it so that it will work with my car and its computer? Or is there some sort of voodoo I can do here to make it work?

I am pretty sure that the fob will only work with the car for which it was originally provided. When an owner needs to obtain a new key for his vehicle, they have to come from Daimler; and there is only a certain number of copies allowed before you have to install a complete new ignition module.

Those go for $200 or more don't they? I only had one for the G 500 when I bought it. The former owner found the other two and sent them to me. The one he gave me had been in the water on a hunting trip. I was lucky it still worked.
