BAS/ESP warning light with very dangerous happenings

I have a 2001 ml320. The bas/esp light coming on as you know is a very common problem.

I have read all the posts on it as it has come on and off intermittently over the last year or so.

It came on a few days ago, and the car lost power and the ml brakes by itself. Very scary stuff when it happens.

All the garages are closed untill janury 2nd for the holidays here so i am hoping to get a little help here.

1) I have checked the break light switch as suggested and as i cant get a replacement till 2nd january i sprayed soem wd40 on it to loosen it up and seem to be working fine.

2) When the car brakes and loses power by itself, if i turn the ESP off it doesnt seem to happen, but with the esp off when i brake it brakes very dangerously and the it brakes and skids to the right.

3) The problem only seems to occur on long journeys (6 hours plus).

Any ideas what it may be? I hae checked the brake sensors, all look fine. and is no 2 above norml with ESP off?

many thanks in advance-i am desperate any more info!

Re: BAS/ESP warning light with very dangerous happenings

i just recently had similar incident. 2000 ML 55 125K miles.
I was driving at about 75mph. the ! triangle started to blink and the brakes applied itself pitching the truck left and right about 4 times. then it was OK. when I slow to about 60mph. It was scary! Could have hit other cars if I didnt catch the direction on time. This was also on a long trip. over 6 hours.

Yes the BAS/ESP light stays on. It is happening more often now even in slow speed. I cant get it checked out till 2-3 weeks from now. Turning ESP off seem to stop the BAS/esp light to come on. Prob a bad sensor somewhere.
