Mercedes M-Class on the Dakar 2009

Since the year 2000 the MLs participated on the Dakar, and won their category, production vehicles, twice, in 2000 and again in 2003.

This year only one ML is in the running.

RE: Mercedes M-Class on the Dakar 2009

I wonder if the unibody W164 could even compete? The W163 is a true off-roader.

After trying twice and failing with a W164 based prototype, the officially sponsered Mercedes Fleetboard team with Ellen Lohr is using two Mitsubishi Pajeros this year. The thiinking was that Mitsubishi won the overall for the last 13 years and be suitable for this task. Mercedes is playing catchup once again, since Mitsubishi is not winning this year.

HISTORIC VICTORY FOR DE VILLIERS AND VOLKSWAGEN!

Pending validation by the race stewarts, South-African driver Giniel De Villiers has won the 31st Dakar; it is his first success in the rally-raid but - more importantly - it is also the first victory for Volkswagen and for a diesel engine on teh world’s king of rally-raids. It is even a double victory for the German manufacturer as US driver Mark Miller (VW) finishes second in the standings at 8’59". The last one on the podium is US driver Robby Gordon (Hummer), ranking 3rd but finishing with a 1h46’15 delay on the winning duet. De Villiers’ victory is full of panache: indeed, the South-African won the last stage - the 10th stage victory for VW out of the 13 stages in total in the raid (!) - 2" ahead of Russia’s Leonid Novitskiy (BMW). On the production side, it is French driver Nicolas Gibon (Toyota) who finishes first in the general standings and wins the raid.

A well deserved victory, by a great team, I must add. VW races a 2.5 liter diesel. Robby Gordon a 7 liter V8 gasser.

Our guys did well. They finished a very tough Dakar. Congratulations to Jean-Pascal Besson and Yves Kornstein for a job well done!

Jpe Strugo who won the Dakar with the ML430 in the production class in 2000 and 2003, dropped out this year. He was driving a Nissan, and may have been regretting his choice. Who knows, maybe we'll see him back with a W163 one of these days.

What in the world kind of VW is that?
I was expecting to see a hacked up Touareg since they use hacked up W163's.

RE: Mercedes M-Class on the Dakar 2009

Wolfgang,

You forgot to mention that the VW's are full time 4WD with an unrestricted turbo diesel engine whereas the Hummer is 2WD and has a restrictor plate engine. Not really an apples to apples comparison.

Martin,

the Race Touaregs are required to have air restrictors as well, smaller ones with 38 mm diameter this year. All competitors are required to run them (to reduce fatalities). The 2009 regulations should be online in the competitor section of www.dakar.com.

Some specs:
