ML500 Oil Change

I have decided that I will change the oil in this ML500 myself. Unlike the other M-B's on which I have performed a oil change, there is no dipstick. I vacuum the oil. Is that red plug removable and replaceable or is a replacement necessary?

Thanks

I'm not sure what the engine without a dipstick has to cover the dipstick tube. If it's like the ATF tube, there should be a way to remove it. Does your owner's manual give you any assistance?

A picture would be worth a thousand words of description.

Re: ML500 Oil Change

I'll get apicture to you in the next couple of days. After some thought, I came to the conclusion that the cap was not the same as the locking/replaceable cap used on the transmission dipstick tube. I was able to grab this with one hand today and pull it out of the dipstick tube. The reason it had been so tight is the o-ring used to seal the dipstick tube forms a terrific seal. This is a red cap versus a yellow cap that was used for the tranny if I remember correctly. Picture to follow.

If you have a dipstick tube with a removable cap, that is almost certainly the place to MityVac out the engine oil.

RE: ML500 Oil Change

Interesting. Looks like they saved a dime by not having the measuring cable attached to the cap.

If you can get the MityVac tube down that pipe and suck oil, you've get the right place.

Please limit the size of any future posted pictures to a maximum of 800 pixels on the long side. Thanks.

Re: ML500 Oil Change

Dutch, do you know where can I get the "MERCEDES BENZ" LOGO (STICKER) that goes on top of the 500 engine air filter (113) like the one you can see in the upper photo?

Not sure what "upper photo" you mean. If you mean the only photo posted in this thread, that's a moulded plastic piece that is part of the air filter housing. I doubt if it would be available as a separate piece, except possibly from a wrecking yard.
