Posts: 850  | Revamping rubber trims On the old 460 models all the rubber trims after a while get somehow dull and burnt by the sun. A friend of mine has discovered a great solution. The product is called "Stone Chip" it is a black liquid Poly...something substance. It is waterbased. The application is very simple, dilute the content on a ratio of 60% water, mix well and use a standard spray gun to achieve a smooth finish. Sand with water sand paper the surface prior to paint, wash with water and place to dry. Therafter you can start with the spraying. I have applied three thin coats with an excellent result. Posts: 850 | RE: Revamping rubber trims G-AMG - 5/8/2006 4:49 PM How often does the Jet Black/Stone-Chip need to be re-applied?? I use Meguire's "Rubber Trim Detailer" but it only lasts a month or so. To be honest, we do not have a history on the product with this particular application, but since it is so easy to apply, as soon as it gets grotty, it can be refurbished again. I will keep you posted on it, we have a strong S.O.A.B. Sun  here in SA. I have applied previously the Jet Black but the result was not successful as with the "Stone Chip Paint", it just filled most of the gaps and marks, actually the more coates you apply the better it becomes. | |

I'm looking for a unirform black color or am I dreaming? Eric, I have only experimented on rubber surfaces and it works fine, the solution is a water based one and of a poly mere substance like PVA and I guess if you treat the metal surface with a primer for a poly mere substance , I am quite certain that this will work. However I would suggest that you apply the paint on a small metal surface and expose to the element and see how that will react, maybe stick it to the front bumper. amzimmy | |
