OT but have to rant...

Ok, the BMW STRANDED ME yesterday.
Yup.
STRANDED.
2nd time

First time, the whole transmission blew out and car wouldn't go into gear.
Second time, the car stalled and am told the whole engine wiring harness and throttle body has to be replaced.
And, the list of things replaced grows: Wheel bearings, Drive shaft....

This is on a car built in Dongilfingen, GERMANY.

$55K.

3 years old with 45K miles on the odometer now.

My ML is now 7 years old, with 90K on the odo and has never stranded me like this.

Re: OT but have to rant...

BMW quality has gone down hill over the past few years along with mercedes. So far in 2 years I have had to take it in for failed SMG hydraulic pump, radio broke after 2,000 miles, check engine light which was an error, all of the weather stripping fell off at about 3,500 miles and they said it was normal in Arizona since the glue wasn't made to hold up in this heat but they apparently have a new glue they use. I try and avoid driving the BMW as much as possible since the rule at my house is if you drive the car you take care of it, so if I drive it my dad will make me take it in for service when its time and I hate the BMW dealer.

It's a 530i - a fully loaded one with 5spd manual transmission (thinking that would cause me less problems than an automatic transmission).

Anyway, BMW tells their customers that oil changes are now 15K miles apart (surprise - they pay for the oil change during the ownership like MB so why not extend it) and that transmission fluids are filled for life (and you should read the carnage of auto transmissions on the BMW boards).

I change the oil every 7500 miles, and will change the differential and transmission fluid (even on manual) every 50K miles.

Is it E39 or E60? I heard the E39 5 series is actually one of the most reliable car. I was going to get a used one, but couldn't find a decent one (so far at least). The 5 series depreciation here is actually higher than the 3 series (or the ML, in that case). One of the reason why I was interested in used E39s, the price is attractive. 2003 530i fully loaded's price is comparable to new 2006 Honda Civic.

Re: OT but have to rant...

We almost bought a E39 5-Series, until we heard that the new E60 was coming out. Well, we kinda were mad that the new one was so ugly.

It is an E39. The E60 looks just like a Pontiac.

HAHA! the BMWNA mechanics are just as spotty as MBUSA mechanics!
After they spent 8.5 working hours on the car (according the the service sheet) replacing engine wiring harness and throttle body, there is still a hesitation. I TOLD THEM TO CHECK THE FUEL PUMP! but nooo.....their trusty "code reader" told them what to change!

So back in we go!

Here's proof:

While there is some similarity of the design, I won't be fooled ;)  manufacturers these days don't seem to have a fresh original ideas about car design.. they copy each other. Kia Sorento that looks like M-class.. Kia (forgot what model) that looks like Jaguar S-type.. etc etc

Mercedes is the first manufacturer (correct me if i'm wrong) that has integrated side turning lamp to the exterior mirrors, and now many manufacturers followed it, whether it's the original design (some new VWs) or aftermarket accessories.

Btw, I hope your BMW will get back on the road soon roadsession! Keep us posted

well, she's back home now. They reprogrammed the "DME" or whatever (updated firmware) and the shop foreman took her home yesterday...

She seems ok.
But still wish they would have changed the fuel pump.
