Coming to visit USA!

My Wife and I will be visiting the beautiful US of A. she will be attending a pulmonary seminar in Salt Lake City at the end of October (2006).

Our intention is from the end of Oct to the mid of Nov to travel around.

Since I will not be able to take my trusty G with me, we intend to rent a vehicle and visit all the different places.

Our aim is basically from Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, may be Las Vegas and then over the Rocky M. to Denver.

Now , to have more or less an idea of how to plan this trip I need some little help from some of you guys.

ie: where how and what to rent as a vehicle (a G?) how is best to plan the trip, where to go, distances, nice interesting places (not touristy stuff) to visit, where best to overnight etc etc.

All this info will help me to organize and book the trip well in advance with the T.Agent in SA.

Maybe for obvious reasons you would like to send me something on PM.

Many thanks, amzimmy

Re: Coming to visit USA!

Some of the most beautiful places in the US are not too far from Salt Lake. Be sure to do some exploring in that area. Arches and Canyonlands near Moab are great. Stay in Moab. Visiting the Southwest at that time is perfect because its not too hot.

Re: Coming to visit USA!

I'll try to help with car rental: Check a website like travelocity.com or expedia.com. You can see the selection and price range of many competitors. If you want to bling-bling, and money grows on trees in SA, check out www.exoticrentals.net.

Distances.
San Francisco to Los Angeles 5 hours driving 'safe'
Los Angeles to Vegas 4 hours driving 'safe'
Los Angeles to Mexico 3 hours
(dont drive 'into' mexico with the rental) park at the border and walk across.

hope that helps...

ps. bring one of those money trees

SF to LA

Even thought the trip from San Francisco to LA can be 5 hours. I suggest you take highway 1 and drive down the coast. The 5 hour route takes you through the ugly interior valley where there's nothing. Highway 1 has numerous towns and stunning views. It will probably double the drive time but you would miss out by not stopping in Monterey, 17 Mile drive, Carmel, Big Sur, Hearst Castle, San Simeon. This will be much nicer than LA. I would even devote a couple of days to this route and enjoy it. This will be a highlight to you, much more than LA.

Re: Coming to visit USA!

Ah Tom, but the important question is... what will he be driving? Because even such stunning views can be lost in a P.O.S. rental car.

AZJimmy, check your PM.

If you are going to be in Salt Lake..? Why not drive 3.5 hours over to Jackson Hole, WY. The Tetons are beautiful, and you can go up to Yellowstone Park..! While in town, you can stay at the Rusty Parrot. Great hotel. The people are really great and the town itself is really cool. No pun intended. Nice time of the year to visit. JMO. Have a great trip..!

Sounds plausible, I will make a note of it, .......I discovered......USA is a BIG country.....I need to amplify my holiday time,........ look for an oil-well and........ get myself an Helicopter!

This trip will be a "Just-taste Holiday", there will be shortly more trips up my sleeve to the USA !

RE: Coming to visit USA!

Hertz (nfi) has both LR3 and Jeep Commander available at most locations though you will pay premium rate for LR3. Also available are Toyota 4Runner and Hummers (if you must ). Enjoy the visit.

RE: Coming to visit USA!

I will be in Detroit Area next two weekends for biz. My company ordered an SUV for me - They wanted to do me a favor -  so I will be surprised what I'll get.

Re: Coming to visit USA!

I'd consider checking into flights between major cities. The Cali drive is great, others will just waste your vacation. www.southwest.com is great for 1-way no-frills flying.

Thanks for the suggestion, I have considered this factor, but Airports are for me the "pits", I spend almost 1/4 of my life in airports, the time that you loose by waiting and shuffling between terminals and getting there is just not our kind of pastime. The other matter is with luggage.....even in bus-class....you are always restricted. Obviously the best is to have an helicopter on standby for the two weeks..........but unfortunately I haven't found THAT darn oil well yet! ;^)

So, we would prefer to drive and even if that means to give one ore two days to "racing" through (1600 km/day-1000 ml/day) to get to the "place", we don't mind.

MarcO,
I have surfed the net (such a great commodity) and found all the necessary quotes and rates, .....amaizing that to rent a standard car for two weeks will cost in a region of 800 US$ and for a all-terrain vehicle about 3800 US$ .
Here in SA one can find a G for rent (obviously a 460 mod) for much less.

thanks for the good wishes,

amzimmy

RE: Coming to visit USA!

You might try asking if they discount for any organizations (AAA) get the rate then join the organization for the rate. Also any organization you might already belong to.

Best of luck.

You will get a significantly lower hire rate if you list an address/phone number in the US vs. SA (your hotel for example). Budget, Hertz, Alamo, etc. all have 4WD vehicles for hire at reasonable rates.

Enjoy your trip.
