It's strange, at speeds just off idle, the ML runs a little jerky. The CEL does not come on, and other than that, it runs like a dream.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

RE: running funky

IE; if I am driving in a parking lot at slow speed, less than 5MPH, there is a slight amount of surging. If I give it more gas, it accelerates without any issues and runs smoothly. Anything above 5mph, there is no surging, and no issues. CEL has never come on, no change in mpg, no change in sound etc.

If I am still missing details, let me know what I need to add.

Thanks

Re: running funky

Does it seem like it is staying in a low gear and not getting out of that gear?

No issues with the tranny. It is just not smooth when I first get on the gas at slow speed, ie if the engine is at about 800rpm, and if I slowly get on the gas it kind of jerks. If I press the gas harder no problems, nice and smooth. If I pin the gas, just goes like stink.

If it is not an issue with 1st gear could it be a bad accelerator potentiometer (I don't know what the proper term is for the variable resistor which is driven by the accelerator pedal)? You could measure if it was bad at the 'slow end' with an ohmmeter.

Thanks Marcelc, I'll get that checked out.

Duh. I was at the dealer yesterday and I forgot to get them to check this issue out.

If the problem is the accelerator potentiometer, is this a DIY? So long as I don't have to be a contortionist, I'll tackel it.

Re: running funky

It's the thingy at the end of the accelerator cable so access is easy.

I have not taken a look yet, but is this a replace only item, or can it be adjusted?

I don't know is the answer, I've not heard of anybody replacing it or of it ever failing. I was just saying I would test it with an ohmmeter.

I had one fail many years ago on a Chrysler and it caused all sorts of bad problems, like the engine dying at return to idle and a rich mixture, etc.

In hit, humid weather, my ML has the “hesitation” problem.  It usually occurs when the ambient temp is over 85F and the engine temp is close to that from sitting in the sun all day.  It seems to clear up one the engine gets to full operating temp.  If that’s your problem, you’ll likely have to live with it since even the experts at MBZ cannot solve it!  They call it The Miami Problem and it affects about 5% of all 3.2-liter V6 engines, not just the ML (although it oddly seems to be more prevalent in the ML).
