Thanks for the pictures, very detailed!

Looks like most 5 speeds will need this sooner or later.

Just stopped by my mechanic and he showed me a whole box of failed units internals....

This rear thrust bearing is one of the frequent failures of Mercedes 722.6 five speed automatics used in all models. Previous versions did not have the attached grips, and so there was a tendency to rotate in the bushing and wear the seat down until it fails.

RE: TRANSMISSION 722.6 ML270CDI PICS INSTALLATION

Hopefully all those design updates will give me the "rest life" of the ML trouble free now! .

Basically it's removing the a middel piece of an equation of mechanical parts. Removal is the engine at one end ... and the transfer case on the other, ... so the removal summary is.

Initial
---------------
All 3 engine coverings (Front, middle, back). Get new plastic clips/screws

Engine end Transfer case end
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
oil filler pipe cross member
oil cooler lines propeller shafts
engine transfer Plate (converter to engine, rotate engine) exhaust bracket
housing case bolts (special long wrench extension) housing case bolts
ecu electrical connector electrical connector

important is to note:

1. Make sure you have / don't have the mechanical or electronic controlled "push lock".

2. Use a long screwdriver when separating the transmission from the engine
to lever the converter through the holes underneath the housing (same screwdriver as for tightening the propeller shafts)
This ensures the converter will come out withe the transmission
See picture above!

3. Remove the top filler pipe bolt from above.

4. Use a unversal joint at the end of the long wrench extension and tape it for stiffness.
This gives the ideal setup when removing the bolts from the housing fastening the transmission to the engine.

5. Parts & Tools

Order and replace the following addtional parts
- engine transfer plate viewport covering
- 2 bottom plastic coverings in transmission case (when removed you can see & lever the converter outwards)
- filler pipe O-Ring
- engine underneath covering clips/screws
- 7L transmission fluid (only OEM)

Additional Special tools (If you don't have them)
- Long wrench extension + universal joint
- Very large screwdriver (or leverage bar)
- Fluid funnel
- IR temparature sensor (see one of my "checking oil level posts)
- Fluid level dipstick
- Brake fluid cleaner (flush oil cooler lines)

Items to borrow
- Car Lift
- Transmission support stand
- pneumatic wrench tools (optional)
- compressed air gun (flush oil cooler lines)

6. Use the OEM funnel (with filter) when filling oil into transmission

7. Initially pour 4.5 L in, then run the engine warm, then fill/measure up to the middle of the oil marker of your dipstick
Use IR temp sensor, or SDS Computer to read temperature.

8. When installing parts make a "3x procedure" for tightening the bolts

1. loosely fit bolts by hand
position all parts
2. tighten with pneumatic wrench (or mechanical if you don't have access to one)
3. re-visit each bolt and tighten hard (using a screw driver for extra leverage if needed)

9. The bolts attaching the transmission to the transfer case require a simple key (no wrench, or pneumatic tool).

10. Careful that the initial converter bolt holes are in the correct position (aligned with the viewport hole) before pusing the transmission onto engine.
You can only rotate the engine , not the converter to align them (viewing though the viewport)

11. You definately need 2 people when lifting out both the transfer case , and the transmission.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Given the right tools and access to a lift/support stand, I definately think this is a relatively easy DIY job !.

RE: TRANSMISSION 722.6 ML270CDI PICS INSTALLATION

Wolfgang,

Thanks for the pic of one of the design changes!.

Although I asked about all the design changes, I still don't know them .... The "southern german" style of explanation didn't really help me remembering/understanding all of them .... I guess the only one that I managed to remember after his very quick flamboyant report was the magnet!.

After asking numerous MB techs in various Dealerships the common consensus seems to be :-

1. Maximum effective transmission life is expected at 200'000KM
2. Anything over 150'000 is considered a bonus, most of them give up around this "laufleistung" (service time)
3. Most Taxi Driver's need replacement 100K - 150K
4. Regardless of the "filled for life", dealerships are changing their customers transmission fluid every 60'000 KM
5. MB is 2-3 times of purchasing & installing the transmission elsewhere.

Hi Peter.

Well done on the quality and detail of the information.
Still sorry to see it happen to you. I know this was not cheap fix.
Anyway, I learnt a lot about transmissions from the pics and info you provided.

Cheers,
George.

I jusz noticed my formatting got lost in the installation summary

ask your mechanic what all the changes where ... It will be much better than me using the "schwaben" translator ... to "German" ... to "english"!.

Just to make the pics above a little easier to visualize , some pics from the EPC

I would be very interested in knowing what actually failed, in Schwaben, German or even in English, and thanks for such a great post.

Good Idea,

Wonder if the schwaben supplier "Mr. Maier from Esslingen" (seen in one of the earlier pictures making the push-lock conversion) will actually take the old one appart!.

Park Lock - Design & Function - without One Touch

This is the Park position lock story!. (Remember my on-site conversion above)

First for older Automatic 5 Speed Transmissions (without one-touch) , then for later ones with one touch (electronic controlled park lock).
