The most complicated part of this was removing the Comand, and I'll do a separate thread on that little exercise some time. The Pioneer is a standard double-din unit, and it fits in the hole for the Comand exactly. However, it doesn't support itself in there, since it doesn't have the pegs on the sides that the Comand has that slide into a support channel in the truck. The easiest workaround is to put some spacers at the bottom. They need to be exactly 5/8" thick. I happened to have some brass bar stock that size, and you can see the two pieces in one of the photos - the ends are red. You need to be right at 5/8", otherwise the mounting holes won't line up. I just duct-taped them in. The plastic trim piece is from Crutchfield, for a C-class. It is part number 142MZ2340B Mercedes C230 Kit 2002-04. It fits perfectly to the radio and to the hole in the truck, and the mount holes will line up exactly if you use a 5/8" spacer as described above. I had to countersink the plastic side pieces to mount them with the supplied screws. If you don't countersink the plastic, the screws will protrude too much sideways and the radio will not slide in. So that's very simple mechanically. The Crutchfield link is: http://tinyurl.com/yacabxf Hat-tip to forum-member "thearc" for discovering that Crutchfield sold this. I installed the GPS antenna and the XM antenna above the front driver's side headlamp. That is where the factory GPS antenna is for the Comand, so there is already a nice metallic plate to use. The cables need to go into the wheel well, then into the engine bay, then through the firewall. The Pioneer XM module is large compared to others I've used in the G, so I installed it under the passenger seat in the box formerly used to hold the Teleaid system. To do a proper job of running the cables to that location, you need to remove both front seats and the cover over the shifter / handbrake area. You will also need to remove the air ducts at the bottom of the center console below the ashtray before you can pull cables down from the radio. If you lift the rear carpets, there are cable conduits in the body floor you can use to go the last bit to the passenger seat area. You could just hide it all along the edge of the carpet, but you'd hate yourself. Electrical connections are pretty straightforward. If you don't want to cut the existing harness, you can use an adapter. I got one from www.autotoys.com. It is a Metra GSXL, part number is 70-9401. It is for a landrover, but it works on the Comand 2.0 as well. I'm not sure how I figured that out. It plugs into the unused Comand A and B connectors. The Metra link is http://www.metraonline.com/products.aspx?s=70-9401 and the Autotoys link is http://tinyurl.com/y97lotx There are some other connections to make that aren't obvious. The Pioneer can use a speed signal from the truck if it is available, and it makes the system much more responsive and accurate if you use it. You can get this signal from the unused Comand Connector C2, pin 06, the wire is blue+green. To satisfy the lawyers, you need to connect a park brake signal to the Pioneer. If you look at the back of the G500 park brake there are two microswitches. Use the top one, and connect to the grey wire. It stops you watching DVDs while driving. You can google how to defeat this, but I decided to be a boy-scout. I used the supplied microphone, but I have since found the cable for the Mercedes microphone, and I'll give that a try shortly. I bought an interface for the steering-wheel switches, but I haven't had a chance to play with it yet. Posting this for posterity, in case anyone else gives it a shot and searches for info. But use the supplied pan-head screws in the lower, forward position on each side. You can see it in the photo. The head of this screw will engage in a channel in the truck, and keep it all very tight. The other screws need to be flush with the plastic. Also forgot to mention: The Pioneer Z110BT comes with a map of Baja. It also lets you plug in an SD card and record your tracks. Useful stuff. I'll play with that and report back. It has street map of La Paz for example. Not very detailed, but it's there. Edited by W5YK 3/26/2010 11:10 PM

First one shows the air duct below the ashtray. That has to come out so you can run cables behind it. To get it out you tilt the base forward. There is a metal stand to the left of it that has a small control module on top of it, and that has to come out (already removed in photo) before the air duct will come out. Second photo shows the mounting tabs on the side of the Crutchfield trim. You need the spacers below the radio to bring the tabs up vertically to align with the screw holes in the truck. Don't just rely on the tabs to take the weight, there will be too much twisting force on them and they will break first time you go off road I bet. Third one shows the hood fully raised to the windshield to give access to the firewall feed-through hole. To get the windshield to do that, just disconnect the shock absorber that holds it up. The firewall hole is beside the brake booster, near the +12V terminal. Fourth one shows the cable-routing channels in the floor below the passenger seat. There is a cover plate over these normally, and that just pulls off. You can route cable all around the truck using these channels. Fifth picture shows the center area beside the passenger seat. You need to take the cover off to route cables and to connect to the brake switch. It's easy to remove. Just remove the wood pieces around the gear shifter, then the screws all around the base of the carpet skirt, and the whole thing lifts off, carpet and all. Don't try to separate the carpet skirt, it can't be done until the whole assembly is out of the truck. Hope that might help someone someday. It was magnetic mount. I put it there because I could run the cable straight into the back of the turn indicator housing (there is a nice gap for a cable) and then through into the wheel well. I could not figure out a way to get a cable to the roof (except maybe up the rain channel, but it is hard to thread the XM connector through). Also I have a big Hannibal roofrack, so that would have screened a small antenna on the roof. That location worked very well - I never ever lost the XM signal, even down in Cabo. Once I got the new antenna installed above the headlight, I tossed that old one. Nice big scratches in the paint from the mag mount. That ham antenna is a 2m/70cm whip that I got at HRO in San Diego. Can't remember the make. Larsen? I had to drill a hole for that, which is where I crossed the Rubicon. The roof would be better for a ham antenna than the fender, RF-wise, but my roofrack wouldn't allow it. Cabling is easier to the fender though. It works very well there, I'm noticeably louder than my buddies with antennas on top of their mogs. Don't know why.

I have attached a photo of what it has for La Paz. The red line going north is a nav line measuring the distance to my house. There isn't much documentation in the handbook, and I haven't had much time to play with it, but here's what i've figured so far: -You can save your tracks to an SD card -You can download software from Pioneer that runs on a PC (no Mac) to make Points of Interest from Google Maps, or from Flickr geo-tagged photos, and put them on the SD card. -You can save/import in CSV and KML files May not be perfect for Baja trips, but it looks promising. I have a Pioneer AVIC in my Land Cruiser and absolutely LOVE it. I paid to have mine installed though and it was almost $1000 for labor if memory serves me correct. That was with 4 new speakers and a rear view camera too, but still it was a pretty penny. You saved a bundle by doing it yourself. Thanks for the pics, I might be using these one day... Tom

It's not essential to use one of these, but it makes life easier. You can do all your wiring on the kitchen table and then just go and plug it in. Much easier than splicing to wires in the truck. The way it comes, all the speaker connections (B-connector) are correct. The power connections (A-connector) are not correct, and you will need to move a couple of pins around. I attached the Comand pinouts so you can figure that out. (metra.jpg) (Comand2pins.jpg) Attachments ---------------- metra.jpg (42KB - 7 downloads) Comand2pins.jpg (76KB - 15 downloads)

There is a $200 rebate on the Pioneer unit - until 3-31-2010! Karl Karl, I think I cannot get the rebate. I bought from Amazon, and they are not listed on the Pioneer web page as an authorized dealer, so no rebate. But I think I saved more than $200 buying from them, so it is not a disaster. I have not tried an iphone with it, but I have read on the Pioneer forums that it works very well. There is an iphone app that lets you find where you want to go on google maps, and then sends it to the Pioneer. The ipod interface is really good. You can browse from the ipod or from the Pioneer. The Pioneer browsing is nice. There is also an ipod wheel displayed on the Pioneer touch screen you can use. Audio quality is excellent. I put my ipod in the center armrest where the cellphone cradle used to be. The ipod gets charged by the Pioneer.

I've never had a back up camera before (and honestly though they were for soccer moms and girly men) but after years of hooking up boats by myself (reverse, park, get out and see how far you are from the hitch, get back in, reverse, park, etc. etc. etc.) having the back up camera has been awesome. I ordered the BOYO VTL400 back up cam (http://www.crutchfield.com/p_707VTL400/Boyo-VTL400-Rear-view-Camera.html?tp=83) when I installed my AVIC unit in my Land Cruiser and it changed everything. It lights up well at night and makes trailering, parallel parking, and backing out of my driveway without running over any kids and/or their toys a whole lot easier. If the G I purchase doesn't have a rear view camera, it will be one of the first purchases I make. My ¢.02
