Re: Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT installed in 2002 G500

So I was curious as to my steering wheel button functions. The upper right button which are the volume buttons in my 02 do nothing for the radio in my 07 but work in the menu screens On the instrument cluster. The lower buttons which were the telephone buttons in my 02 are blank in the 07 and do nothing.

in the 07 on the instrument cluster there is no menu for the radio, nav or telephone, there is only settings, malfunctions and trip menus.

Does this mean anything specifically?

Also, I was looking at dash kits and the 08 c320 kit looked like it would work. I will order to confirm unless someone else knows it won't work.

Re: Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT installed in 2002 G500

Seems the last owner had the Tele-aid bypassed with couplings, then reset with Xertry to avoid constant cluster messages. Might explain why many steering wheel buttons no longer work as they once did.
Your 07, if it has fiber optics, is a bit more difficult to swap out the headunit, from what I've read. Seems you'll need to reconfigure new amps and wiring. No fun, but it seems to be worth it at the end.
Are you sure your head unit is Fiber? Have you removed it to see if fiber is connected to the head?
Seems two types of head units where used, Harman Becker, "non fiber"or Bose "fiber optics", till 05. 07, I can not comment on!

RE: Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT installed in 2002 G500

so i could not wait till the w/e to figure out which radio i have. here are a few pics of the radio. after i unplug the orange fiber optic wires everything still works except the cd changer. music came out of the speakers when operating the radio, nav and cd player behind the screen.

with the orange wires unplugged there was a red laser coming out of the radio with a warning sticker not to look at it.

I have the HK/B amp under the driver seat.

i bought from a friend that has never modified one thing on the car so i am hoping the radio and cd changer are d2b and the rest of the car is MOST so i can use the factory amp for the speakers and upgrade the instrument cluster!

here are the pics:

Re: Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT installed in 2002 G500

Check this out... Early 2007's had a mixture of old D2B and new MOST. Later 2007's (built after Jan 2007) and onward had only MOST. You have an early 2007 as you have the older instrument cluster, no steering wheel controls (old style steering wheel design) for the radio/nav/telephone and no rear view camera. The orange wires are the MOST fiber there should be some more orange fiber under the passenger seat that dead end there. When I added bluetooth to my 2007 I connected a module to the dead ends there and added the puck module in the center console. I also added an aux wire which I purchased on eBay and plugged into the rear of the comand APS and fed the 3.5mm wire through the glove box as 2008 and newer G's have. You can also hook up an iPod integration kit if you want use the w203 kit for 2005-2007. You can also add a rear view camera that will be plug and play with the headunit if you find the right kit. I'm planning on doing that this fall.

I was considering A full aftermarket update of the headunit but the high end audio shop I went to convinced me not to with the mixture of systems (D2B and MOST) my G had and he had done many 2002-2006 G's.

Good info NYG500! but honestly by the time i buy the BT puck and the AUX cable i can just about buy a new touchscreen APP4 pioneer HU and i would have full control over every channel EQ and gain a dedicated sub out channel on top of gaining SIRI control over my iphone. if i upgraded the COMMAND unit to get a better resolution with 3d maps it would likely cost 2-3x's the pioneer route and still be old tech imho.

i am very excited to get my parts in as i have the NEX5000 in my G500 and can not imagine downgrading to an old MB radio.

right now my biggest fear is the dash kit not fitting right and having to break out the fiberglass...

RE: Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT installed in 2002 G500

ok so i have done some testing and this is what i found.

on what everyone is calling connector A i have different numbers as it is a diff connector body. the numbers are what are on my connector body and the numbers in parentheses are what the 02-05 uses. i also noticed that the skinny brown and skinny brown/red are twisted together but terminated a few pins apart. i was trying to identify grounds by checking for continuity to the chassis. i could not find a 12v+ that cycled on/off with the key. is there a trick sequence to get the ignition 12v+ to switch off? in this truck the command turns off with the key but if you hit power it will turn back on. can someone check my colors against theirs in an 02-05 truck?

these are the wires colors and functions as best i can tell:

pin 9 (1) skinny brown ground
pin 10 (2) empty
pin 11 (3) brown/red no voltage or continuity to ground
pin 12 (4) thick brown ground as it has continuity with the chassis
pin 13 (5) skinny black 12v+ constant
pin 14 (6) empty
pin 15 (7) fat red/blue 12v+ constant
pin 16 (8) skinny blue/black 12V+

For my A connector the wires are spot on with the earlier post from a 02-05 car. i tested for voltage from the speaker +/- terminals coming out of the command and was getting less than 1V that did not seem to fluctuate with volume. the +/- did register correctly based on the speaker +/- from the wire diagram and go to zero when the command was turned off. i am not sure if i was supposed to be looking voltage across, so if i need to check ohms or some other reading please let me know.

everything works with or without the MOST cable plugged in.

one question, did you hook up the powered speaker outputs from the pioneer HU to the adapter harness, or use the RCA line outputs to the adapter harness?

thx

Has anyone ben able to do similar to a pre 2002 vehicle, I would like to try & upgrade my 2000 G55 factory radio with something better but still retain at least the volume control on the steering wheel. Has anyone one done similar.

Your wiring setup looks different than mine but perhaps the wire color and designation is the same?

Here's what I found and noted with my HU swap, Pioneer SPA120

It's been done. You'll need the Axxess ASWC-1 steering wheel control.

again, it depends on what type of sound system is being used in your truck.

On my install (MY2005) I used the speaker output from the Pioneer unit, not the RCA outputs.

Did anybody locate the signal from the lux-sensor in the windshield to the command, I would like to use it to dim the display, - as I need headlights on at all time as running-lights?

The Mercedes analog amplifiers are expecting high level (e.g., speaker level) signals as input. Unless you have a head unit that supplies special high level RCA signals (done to cut down on ground loop noise), use the speaker outputs.

I think you should be able to set the headlight mode to "constant" via the instrument panel which would activate the headlights without activating the parking lights. You could then use the parking light as the signal to dim the display because the will only become active when the light sensor thinks it's "dark".

I was think somewhere along these lines, basically anything that can play CD's & interface with an iPhone etc. http://uae.souq.com/ae-en/pioneer-bluetooth-cd-mp3-usb-ipod-iphone-...

I am not sure if mine has the Axxess ASWC-1 steering wheel but it does look similar to the post 2002 ones but I know the pre 2002 do not have a CAN bus.

This is exactly the same as my interior. http://www.benzworld.org/forums/attachments/g-class/307915d12738599...

Forget the CD player and focus on the iPhone integration.
My CD's are now stored in the cellar, but all favorite songs where migrated to iTunes and iPhone!
I've yet to understand how to have music play and directions at the same time, quirky, but user error I'm sure!
Siri is a bit sketchy with the SPA120, if windows are open but nice to have for hands free calling or texting. Many pros over cons, compared to stock command unit.
Axxess is a company that sells the steering wheel button integration, when swapping out your command unit/head unit.
It works pretty flawlessly, once you read directions.
