Re: Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT installed in 2002 G500

Just spoke to one of the better local car stereo installers about replacing the stock G55 COMAND and he indicated to me a few things I wanted to run by the forum:

Here's what he said
1) If I replace the comand unit, I will also need to add a new amplifier (to run the speakers 5-10)
2) I would lose the center speaker (above the center vents)
3) Since there are 10 speakers in the car, the pioneer AVIC (950 or Z150) can only run 4 of them. I would need a 5 channel amplifier to run the remaining speakers.

So a few questions for the forum:
1) Where is the current HK amplifier & can it be reused (if so, how'd you do it?)
2) If not, can anyone recommend a good amplifier
3) Did anyone lose their center speaker (or any other speakers) during their install?
4) I read that the center speaker has 4 connectors, can anyone verify and explain how they connected it?
5) The comand pinouts looks like there are only 4 speaker outputs, can I just splice in the new receiver into those connections? And keep using my existing HK receiver?

Thanks again for all of the input.

Re: Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT installed in 2002 G500

I'm about to dive into this upgrade using the Pioneer Appradio4.
The last post made asked many of the questions I've been concerned about.
I too have the Harmon/Becker amp under the drivers seat and 10 speakers.

Will I loose half my audio or is there a way to tap into the stock amp?

Thank you guy's

Re: Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT installed in 2002 G500

I have an 2005 with Amp under the driver's set. I've had no issues with any sound loss. Best Upgrade yet.
I have a bunch of links I can send you to order all the parts and some How-To's for the installation.
I also ran dual USB ports to the Armrest and playing music from thumb drives. Radio: Pioneer 7000NEX.

Keith, did you need to install a fiber optic loopback from the command?

No, nor do I even know what that is. It's a pretty easy installation. You need ACC Power from the Cig Lighter.
The Harness is approx. 99% Plug-N-Play.
I recently finished the Backup camera, Tapped the reverse wire from the Rear CD Changer Area.

I can email you some pics...

Maybe the 2004 is different! I haven't removed the radio yet. Want to make sure I have all parts on hand.

From all I can source online, seems most Merc's use fiber optics to loop Tele-aid, SRS, command, CD changer, amp, so on and so on. If one component is removed the FO loop is open, raising hell with the cluster!

I looked at my amp closely, it has no FO attached, strange!

I have removed my CD-charger years ago, hence leaving the FO open, hell did not rise in my car....

BTW my Pioneer SPH-DA120 unit should arrive today

RE: Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT installed in 2002 G500

The Pioneer SPH-DA120 comes with both connections to front and rear speakers via the ISO-connector, and also separate RCA-connectors for front, rear and SW-amplifiers.

So now I need to establish the MB OEM set-up to feed the amplifier ....

Re: Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT installed in 2002 G500

Removed the command last night. Good news, it has a fiber optic connection but no FO was connected to the head unit. I guess i'll be easier than I thought!

thebigblue, I'll do my best sorting out the amp wiring today, if I can find a schematic or someone online that has located the pins.

RE: Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT installed in 2002 G500

For what it's worth, here's what I know, most of which is from my work with other models, but should somewhat apply to the G-wagen, albeit in different years.

The audio systems in 2002 - 2005 G-Wagens use the D2B fiber optical bus (really a ring) which is an audio only communications link (e.g., no data or video). The later trucks are equipped with a MOST based fiber optic link which is much more capable. Because the D2B bus is audio only, the only devices that link to it are the Command head unit, telephone, CD changer, voice control, teleaid, and in some systems, the amplifier. The Command head unit is the "bus master" for the D2B ring and it also functions as the communications gateway between the audio system and the CAN bus on which the instrument display and steering wheel control information travels.

Because of this topology, disconnecting the fiber bus will have no effect on the CAN bus controlled items. However, removing the Command unit will. Most people won't miss the loss of the D2B modules, but one thing in particular that does seem to be an issue is that you will not be able to set the car clock unless you use the SDS system to "remove" the Command in the car firmware as well.

As near as I can tell, on trucks equipped with the E66 Sound System option (e.g., Harman Kardon), the amplifier is connected via the D2B bus. In addition audio power output to drive the speakers, the amplifier provides a DSP function as well (e.g., the center, surround, and sub-woofer signals). I think that non E66 trucks are just analog, a la, the Bose Active Bass systems in earlier MB cars. For trucks with the D2B amplifier connection, it will not be possible to use the OEM amp to an aftermarket head unit.

Hope this is somewhat helpful.

That is my take on what can be found online. I hope at least!

I have removed the front seats, center console and began to crimp the pig tails together. I hope not all for nothing at this point!

My aftermarket harness excepts two of the five connectors that came off the command. Haven't had time to explore what wire is needed to power the amp from the new head unit's "remote power" source.

Very little can be found online that describe pin number functions of each connector.

I may need an electrical engineer, Floobydust?

Or it may be more simple than I'm willing to except!

Over thinker here!!

Here's where I'm at!

Re: Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT installed in 2002 G500

The amp under the drivers seat has a 40 pin connector with 29 pins being used, four are large red or brown leads, "color blind in the green and red department, BTW". Seems one of the 22 gauge wires activates the relay to the 12 gauge feeds? Laymen's perspective that is!

Re: Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT installed in 2002 G500

The amp under the drivers seat has a 40 pin connector

I think this is the wiring diagram for it..

Where connector 'B' from the back of the command is referenced at the bottom left as A40/3. I can't get the pin-outs to reliably print in the PDF, so I'll cut and paste the speaker pins.. But from the looks of it, pins 1 & 2 are power input, 21 & 22 are ground, 3/4/5/6/23/24/25/26 are speaker inputs from COMAND, and the remaining are speaker outputs.

Speakers and pin assignments:

1.1 Circuit 30 main power input
1.2 Circuit 30 main power input
1.7 Right rear door speaker group + signal output
1.27 Right rear door speaker group - signal output
1.8 Left rear door speaker group + signal output
1.28 Left rear door speaker group - signal output
1.9-1.11 Pins not used
1.13 Pin not used
1.14 Right rear speaker group + signal output
1.33 Right rear speaker group - signal output
1.15 Left rear speaker group + signal output
1.34 Left rear speaker group - signal output
1.16 Subwoofer speaker 2 + signal output
1.35 Subwoofer speaker 2 - signal output
1.17 Subwoofer speaker 1 + signal output
1.36 Subwoofer speaker 1 - signal output
1.2 Pin not used
1.21 Main ground to W10/7
1.22 Main ground to W10/7
1.29-1.32 Pins not used
1.18 Right front door speaker group/Center fill speaker 2 - signal output
1.37 Right front door speaker group/Center fill speaker 2 + signal output
1.19 Left front door speaker group/Center fill speaker 1 - signal output
1.38 Left front door speaker group/Center fill speaker 1 + signal output
1.39 Pin not used

Ok, something to work with, thank you. Where did you access this, I've been stumped locating anything, but really haven't spent much time other than lunch break, while removing the interior.
I've been putting it off, SDS is being ordered tomorrow. seems it'll be needed for a lot of reasons, like this in the future.
Can't wait to see this sucker work! Should be amazing...
