Hood you can stand on... ?

I know I've seen this mentioned for military Gs, but not sure how I'd go about a search here-in. Is there a part number somewhere, and will it fit on a W463? How much weight would that add to the front end?

Not that I plan to set up a sniper team in my neighborhood, but am adding a roof tent and would prefer to go over the hood than up a ladder.

RE: Hood you can stand on... ?

The PUR edition has it. Don't have the number, but I guess any dealer can order one.

RE: Hood you can stand on... ?

How about going up from the rear .......rear bumper to spare tire.....to a nice flat rack with an airtop rear entry tent?

I am wondering about all this my self.......

Re: Hood you can stand on... ?

I remember sometime ago Guido was offering a Canada hood on ebay. But it was quite expensive, like 2,500 euro, or so.

Re: Hood you can stand on... ?

I seems like it would be possible to reinforce your current hood using donor hood sections for support with a structural foam bonded between the 2 panels and some additional crossmembers. A used hood could be had for quite a bit less than a new walk on hood, but it would take a bit of work for sure.

when exported you don't have to pay the tax - or get it back when the merchandise leaves the country

I've gotta agree.  Flip the hood over and fiberglass in some sheet metal braces or even better some of that aluminum honeycomb stuff they make airplanes out of.  It will hardly weigh any more and it will be way stronger.

Caveat:  The crumpling hood is an important part of crash safety.  Also, you might want to stop and think of the possibility of a guillotine effect in a frontal accident.

So I'm guessing that the PUR model would have the proper crumple zones. If I want to lose my head I can think of a lot more enjoyable ways to do it (you know, like getting caught in a compromising position in the company of a teenage lovely...by my equally attractive 30-something wife). Pull a Tiger, if you will. But only the most recent one, the hot 22 y.o. neighbor girl. No offense, but the rest of them were pretty weak on my opinion, kind of pulling a Bill Clinton, sans cigar or stained dress, of course. Lemme tell you, if I was as rich as Tiger, or as powerful as the POTUS, they would be smokin' hot, every one of them. That's all I'll say about it for now, I kind of went off on a tangent there, blame the wait at Five Guys.

Re: Hood you can stand on... ?

I know some people like the tent to open over the hood, although I see zero benefit on a G considering it's rear door swings out (rear hatches that flip up, Toyota, LR3, Range Rover, don't allow a flat drop of the tent platform off the back).

I have mine go off the side, the reason being it's the kind that then creates a covered area when open, useful space when in rain or hot sun. when off the back, you can enclose this area to create a private or weather protected entrance and connection to the interior via the rear.

For the small clam-shell tents, I suppose it doesn't matter but all the ones I've seen have an aerodynamic profile specifically to open to the rear, not the front.

The clam-shell type are considerably lighter weight but they are no where near as protected from weather or as large as something like the ARB rooftent or similar designs using the ladder. These are more of a pain in the butt to set up though too.

Apparently, there have been some changes. I was told that this is no longer true for auto parts. It's true for complete vehicles, but not for parts.

My MBAG parts supplier dealer in Germany told me I needed to provide a Sales Tax ID number, or they would have to start charging the VAT on parts shipped to me in the US.

Is there ANY crash test data available on the PUR???

EDIT: The last time I inquired from Stewart & Stevenson, they said those G's don't meet the US standards of crash safety. The walk on hood seems like a great idea... decapitation in the event of a frontal impact, no thank you.

RE: VAT

Then I must have been lied to on two separate occasions 1.) by the Zoll-Amt in Munich Airport in Sept 2005 (They refused to sign the export documents, saying that auto parts were not included.) and 2.) by MB Niederlassung Dresden about 2-3 yrs ago when they refused all future orders without VAT unless I sent a copy of my Georgia State Sales Tax License.

This is a conspiracy from the insurance companies. It's cheaper to just bury people than to nurse them back into a ssemblance of life
It may also be that it's a much more humane form than slowly bleeding to death than waiting for the rescue people...
(Sorry for that - I'm told I have a macabre humour....)

Re: Hood you can stand on... ?

I am certain that the G hood has strong enough hinges to prevent it from moving into your face
the hook at the grille will do its part as well

Re: Hood you can stand on... ?

Thank you Harald, that is very reassuring. It seems to me that the Pur would perform just as well as the luxury G and any other vehicle in the Mercedes lineup.

So who sells the walk on hood, besides the dealer?
