M110 Engine Tuning 101 Questions

Greetings Gurus!

Finally getting around to doing a tune-up on the '80 280GE, and have a few questions:

1. While adjusting the ignition timing, I couldn't discern any "numbers" on the flywheel, just a white "mark". Is that the "30 deg" mark?

2. HIPINE, is the "professional" model of the Gunson Gastester better than the "standard" model?? I just got the "regualr" unit, and LITERALLY it is held together by two sided tape, and lasted a whole 10 minutes before falling apart. Other than that, $179 for a CO detector which acutally WORKS (vs. $6,000 for other units I looked at) is the bargan of the century.

3. Some previous BOZO messed up the fuel mixture acess screw. It looks like they stripped the threads. I was wonder why there was a tar/sponge material sitting on top of the adjusting screw area. Lo and behold there is NO screw present! Just that sticky black stuff plugging the hole, and not doing a good job at that. Indeed, any little air leak causes a noticeable change in idle speed.
Does anyone have any insight as to how I can rectify the situation?? Does the protection screw acutally screw in, or is it more of a "plug?" May one "rethread" the hole?

4. Last and most difficult--- an electrical gremlin. I have a Diavia aftermarket A/C. When I bought the truck in Jan., the mechanic turned it on and it worked. Ever since it the compressor has turned on only a few times, but I DO know it works. I have traced the wiring the best I can, and see no gross abnormality, but I am very weak at electrical stuff (presently reading the Electronics for Dumbies to beef up on it).
As I recall from the previous site, and can't re-find, there was a way to "short" the system to activate the compressor. It's scorching hot here these days, and am getting a Turkish Bath every time I drive. HELP!

Any input would be appreciated!!

Cheers,
Patrick

RE: M110 Engine Tuning 101 Questions

I have a wiring chart for the Diavia-unit, I'll try to upload it. If it doesn't work send me a pm and I'll e-mail you it!

About the Diavia A/C:

What kind of gremlin do you have? Is the fan not working or is the clutch of the A/C-Compressor not engaging!?
In the last case it can also be possible that your system doesn't have enough cooling fluid anymore. I'm having the same problem in my 280GE with Diavia A/C too ... I had a little leak in the system so after about 2 years there is not enough pressure on the system anymore and a savety-switch within the compressor rejects the activation of the clutch ....

Greeting, Arnd!

RE: M110 Engine Tuning 101 Questions

Thanx to Ivar460 and Arnd (and Electronics for Dummies) I tracked down the A/C problem to the Temperature Control Switch. I've bypassed the switch so when I turn the fan motor on it engages the A/C clutch and Voila,
blessed ice-cold air!!!!

I've internet searched/telephoned up the wazoo to try to find a replacement (Ranco is the manufacturer, there's a bunch of numbers on the unit, but nothing came up in Ranco USA's system).

Apparently, in the U.K., Diavia was taken over by Delphi. Any of our UK bretheren able to give me clues on tracking down a new switch ???

I also order the "screw" for the mixture control access hole, (A0009975986) but ended up not being a screw at all, but rather, a small piece of plastic that "Fell" into the access hole and doesn't seem to serve any purpose at all.

I truly appreciate the participants of this site and thier knowledge!!
