What's this in the engine bay...

What's this in the engine bay...

On the 55's engine, I've noticed something that I don't recognize. Underneath the front cover is what looks like a black pump. (Mine has a Bosch badge on it, but I don't see any model/serial numbers.) It appears to be connected to two small metal cylinders on each side of it.

My camera is charging, so I can't get a pic of it at the moment.

The part you are reffering to is a Air injection pump.

IIRC the air pump injects air into the exhaust system to ensure that excessive hydrocarbons (fuel) is burnt. Just noticed on the decal on our slk that we have one.

Air Injection Pump sounds reasonable by how it looks. However every reference I find online says this was used in cars from the 70s-80s.
