Bumper Update (ML55 and Facelift - MY2002)

Guys,

I am in the process of doing my next little project!. The bumpers! ... (Although mine aren't that bad either, eh?). I want to get the AMG look , but still have a bully 4x4 look at the same time.....

The best place to buy the bumper covers is as usual ebay.de!. Now the best way to go about this is to do some solid researching first! right?..... MMMMM.... Lets see what ebay usually has to offer!

1. Basic bumper coverings (seldom, but not impossible to find some mounting pieces included! Definately try to get as much mounting pieces as possible , they are damm expensive)

2. Fog lights (Both the ML55, and facelfit fog lights pop up every now and then)

3. Tailgate filler panel (Very seldom, .... and if they do get listed .. SNATCH THEM UP ... They are damm expensive new!)
NOTE: The ML55 filler is glued on ... and the Facelift has a rear bracket that gets screwed on!

4. The rest of the parts must be bought from the Dealer ..... some bolts can be re-used from the old bumpers....

TAILGATE FILLER PANEL

Now lets start with the filer panel .....

I wanted to change my bumpers whenever I changed my Winter 18" AMG Wheels to the Summer 20" Brabus Wheels! Something like a summer/winter outfit!..... That won't work because the AMG filler is glued on!!!! Also the AMG filler (stright edges) is a different shape from the Facelift one (rounded at the bottom). I would have to make some special plate, clips, etc... to get the AMG filler to be removable! I didn't want to go that far ....

..... So I'm still doing both ... The AMG update on mine... and the Facelfit update on my mates MY99 ML320!

Right back to the filler panel .... Best to look at the EPC first!

71 = AMG filler panel (no other parts)
74 = Facelift Filler panel ( also 77 backing plate, 80 screws, 83 light covers, )

TAILGATE FILLER PANEL - Cont.

There not much to be said about the OEM Facelift filler panel except that you drill holes into the tailgate , and screw thge backing plate on from the inside.

Now for the ML55 Filler panel. This is a single piece and has to be screwed on.

Here comes the trick! .... The Official MM WIS (see my Retrofit Styling Package in the WIS sticky thread) explains how to glue it on , and what type of gun/glue to use. This gun and glue is a huge (no pic of it) expensive piece of equipment, that needs to heat a 2 part proxy glue before applying it.... MB don't even use it!!!!! The use the same instructions to glue the pieces on , but use the same glue as they stick the windscreens on! It has the same cleaner and primer , but the glue is in a single tube that is applied (same nozzle as the official gun) with a common sealer hand press unit that you can buy in any harware store (You proably have one at home already)

AGAIN ... MB IS USING THIS TO GLUE THE OEM FENDER FLARES AND TAILGATE FILLER PANEL ON!.

It has an MB Partno (A 0059891671) and costs 39,90 Euros (kit comprises of glue tube, cleaner+cloth, Primer+application stick, ... and some winshield wire you don't need)

The nozzle gets a V-Shaped groove cut into it (We need 8mm), so that the right amount of glue is applied!

Are some pics of the WIS front piece of the Official Gun (no pics of the huge gun), and the alternative glue (orderable at any dealer)

Basically you clean (cleaner+cloth) and prime (primer+application stick) both the tailgate surface (where you will stick it onto) and the inside of the filler panel (on the dark smarked strip).

To do this effectively you should align (position) the filler panel first on the tailgate. Then apply a masking tape to surface of the tailgate to mark the top of the penel position. Next measure the distance of the dark stripe on the panel from the outer edge of the panel, then clean/prime the same ring postion on the surface of the tailgate.

Once you have done that you apply the glue to both surfaces (make sure you have that 8mm goove cut into the end of the nozzle).

Last of all ... fix the tailgate temporarily with tape and let dry overnight!.

RE: Bumper Update (ML55 and Facelift - MY2002)

God! I need mod privileges just to go back and correct my spelling mistakes , as well as those extra characters creeping into my sentences ...... Oh well ... run everything through the PLEUBNER -> English translator!

Anyone heard of a "dark smarked strip" (dark marked stripe) , or a "penel" (panel)? .... heh,heh.... Hope you guys understand what I mean , because I am finding it entertaining going back and reading my posts! ....

oh ... there should be a "harware" (hardware) store in your vicinity! you "proably" (probably) know that already ...... I'll try and use the spell checker !
