From Peñaranda to Covarrubias

We did this trip last Sunday. Very picturesque and non-damaging, as befits someone who has rolled and drowned his G-Wagen in his last two outings...

We started the route in the beautiful medieval walled town of Peñaranda de Duero http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pe%C3%B1aranda_de_Duero that contains a castle, palace, walls, convent and a XVII century pharmacy (one of the oldest in the world) that continues its trade to this day.

From there we proceeded north, crossing the places were most of Sergio Leone's The Good, the bad and the ugly was shot. You will recognize many of the pictures in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjDBUL_zhqs

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Good,_the_Bad_and_the_Ugly#Production

And we ended the route in Covarrubias, another wonderfully preserved medieval town, where Princess Kristina of Norway is buried: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Kristina_of_Norway

The pictures are in the usual place: http://picasaweb.google.com/mortinson3/Covarrubias02

Well, that can be one of its many attractives: that you have a great climate variety throughout the year and throughout the country:

Not really... it means that you cannot drive cross-country, but you may use the unasphalted roads.

And saludos to you too!

In Spain we are relatively free to use ROWs (Rights of Way) that originate from centuries ago. Bizarrely, you cannot cross state-owned land but you can cross private estates using these ROWs. Literally the world upside down

But as I said, there are millions of kilometers of unpaved roads that you can use. Also the fact that the Guadalajara province, which is one of the places in the EU with lower population density is a blessing. You can literally drive for 14 hours without seeing a soul. This might not be news in the US of A, but in Europe it is certainly a privilege.
