The names have not been in arabic for more than 800 years. However, the modern name of Guadalajara (including the one in the Mexican state of Jalisco) comes from the arabic wād al-ḥaŷara واد الحجر (river of stones). It seems that the name was first applied to the river Jarama (the one I drowned my G in) for obvious reasons. Guadalajara is the 10th largest city in Latin America in terms of population,[4] urban area [4] and Gross Domestic Product.[5] The city is named after the Spanish city of Guadalajara, with the name originating from the Arabic word wād al-ḥaŷara (واد الحجارة or وادي الحجارة) the literal translation of the Iberian name Arriaca, meaning "stony river".[6] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Province_of_Guadalajara Incidentally, the globe is full of names of arabic origin thanks to the ambition and bravery of the Spanish Conquistadores. Mendaña's subordinate, Pedro de Ortega Valencia, named the island after his home town Guadalcanal in Andalusia. The name comes from the Arabic Wādî al-Khānāt, which means "Valley of the Stalls", because of the refreshment stalls which were set up there during Muslim rule in Andalusia.
