Re: Bringing the G Home

Pablo,

just got back from that beach - I had more than one cold brew.
Not to mention our home made Margaritas

unfortunately I got hit by a sting ray (even though I am always extremely careful)

the stinger penetrated half way through the foot!
The pain was so intense (it is the most excruciating pain one can imagine) that I broke out in cold sweat ready to vomit every second. According to the US Coast guard, 70% of attack victims go unconscious from the intense pain
http://www.jerrylabella.com/stingray.html
I got the other two in the group to boil water immediately. The bleeding was profuse
and I used the opportunity to massage as much blood and venom out.
I used the water as hot as I could stand it without screaming too loud.
The pain went away quickly due to the intense heat. But I burned my skin about 1" in diameter.
Even though the pain went away quickly my foot started swelling the next day to about elephant size.
Right now I am fighting to keep infections away.

Good reason to have more beers!

Didn't you tell me once a blue moon ago to always have cold beer and valium handy (in case of emergency)? The latter coupled with the former would seem appropriate in this instance ...

Yikes. MMMMMMMMMMMMM ....... beer.

Re: Bringing the G Home

When I was down in April with my 16yr old son Kevin, he was stung by a sting ray setting down on the sand in front of the beach his first run of the afternoon kiting at La Ventana. Same story lots of pain, couldn't walk. We boiled water right away, as hot as he could tolerate, and it got completely better within 45 min to an hour. That and a long late afternoon in the hammock with the foot elevated and he was good to go for another session the next day. Scary though, but no antibiotics necessary.

Between that and the puffer fish and jellies, a little bit of caution is required before throwing a front flip off the beach.

OOOUUUCCCHHH. Man that looks brutal Harald. Your foot looks huge. How is it working the gas pedal? The up side is you and I can limp around at Dai's asking for folks to fetch us beers....

Re: Stingray

Ouch. I hope it continues to heal un-evently. Those stings can be serious and are real painful but you know that. At least your knew the first-aid treatment.

Re: Stingray

hot water works better and faster than the hospital treatment, because it can be applied immediately
a trip to a doctor/hospital would mean hours of agony

I have driven a few victims to hospitals over the years - they all wanted to die on the way
seen a 6'7" football player one year turn into a stammering piece of nothing in 2 seconds flat

Re: Bringing the G Home

Can't you just pee on it to treat the toxin?
I offered that option to my boy, but he chose certain death ... that is until we found out about the hot water trick.

Re: Bringing the G Home

Eric,

if you pee hot enough and long enough it will work
hot water seems more reliable

Re: Bringing the G Home

Glad you brought the G back to OR Eric!

My goodness Harald, I'm glad you're ok after the sting. I should have been more cautious when I was down there. Now I know better.
PS--I hope you remembered to install the drain plug in the boat before heading out.
