ECU reset?

Has anyone tired this? I got it from another forum. It does seem to make a difference, or maybe it is just in my head?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tried this tip from my E55 brothers on our ML55s. Both seem to respond a bit better. Anyone else want to give it a try Please post your results.

1. Turn the ignition key to the on (not start) position.

2. Press the gas pedal to the floor and hold for five seconds.

3. Turn the key to the "off" position (don't remove the key), then release the gas pedal.

4. Wait at least two minutes for ECU to reset.

I had posted about my ML running a little funky at just off idle, and this seems to have cured it.

Re: ECU reset?

Other people say it doesn't reset the ECU itself, but rather the adaptive transmission. Either way, they all say it works.

The downside is that you have to perform those steps every time you're going to drive it.

Only if you want to reset the TCU.

RE: ECU reset?

Once you reset the trany ecu, does it not "learn" the new driving style? For example, after driving a little more conservatively in the winter, would the ecu not learn the summer style?

Re: ECU reset?

Yes, this reset seems to work; I've tried it without pressing the kickdown switch (when at full throttle), I'll try it with the kickdown switch another day.

This is just what I needed as it happened as the Tranny ECU seemed to lose all its adaptive learning when the battery went flat a few times until I replaced it, thanks to Phoenix44.

The way I understand it, the transmission is constantly learning and changing. When I don't drive ours for a couple of weeks
and the wife has been I notice a change in the transmission shift points and amount of throttle applied. When she drives it after
I have put a couple of hundred miles on it she notices a difference.

So it would be fair to assume that after winter when you can hit the go pedal harder the trans should adapt without a reset.

Oops, I just realised that this looks as if I am blaming Phoenix44 for replacing my flat battery, I meant thanks for the reset information.

No worries Marcelc, and I should not be given the credit for the ECU idea, as I pointed out that I saw this on another forum.
