well done!

Is the speedo accurate. I seem to think 82 pulses is 4.11 diff ratio??

I will do a testdrive once the car is legal to put on the road again. I'm not allowed to drive on public roads at the moment.

But originally, the 290GDT is fitted with the 3.72:1 axles, but although I have such ring and pinion sets, I'm now using the original 4.88:1. Also, as I'm driving on 255/85R16 tires, I just have to see how far off the speedo will be.

Will update later.

Not exactly the same type of conversion.
Mine was a 280GE with 4sp manual to begin with.
Also, the om602DELA is a different engine that the om602 n/a that they converted to a turbo.

Nornally, I have my doubts about putting a turbo on a n/a engine without additional cooling, oil squirters and such that a factory turbo engine has. But if it works for them, I'm alright with that.
I would choose the om602a or om662a engine if a wanted a mechanical turbo diesel in my G and not starting with a n/a engine.

But again, different car to start with, different engine and different project.

I am pretty sure they put in the factory turbo DI om602.982 from a W210 E290.
Special inline pump used.

RE: 460G with OM602 290TD engine

They used the intake manifold, exhaust manifold and turbo from the sedan. That was moved to the NA 290 already in the G. So the engine core is still the same old normal aspirated prechamber engine with whatever wear and tear it had, now with more fuel and a newfound boost.
That develops more heat... and increases the load on the bearings.

It will be nice to drive for a while. Then the engine will find it's mechanical limits.

Trouble is with this and other video's. The translation of the Swedish audio is not always clear and omits details here and there.

Thermal management of moving and rotating parts will make or break anything in engines and drivetrain.

I don't see them removing/installing engines, but only swapping parts as Johnny indicates (also shown in clip), so I have to agree with him on this.
But again, quite a different project than mine. More a turbo conversion than a diesel conversion.

The engine of a E290TD is however quite similar to the 290GTD engine.
Only the G has the water-cooled intercooled and the E-class engine uses a MAF sensor which is not present on the G engine.

Apart from installation details (oil pan and such) a E290TD or Sprinter 2,9 liter engine makes a nice donor for the G. I think a pretty big wiring task that comes with these direct injected engines holds people back from using them for the G. I of course agree the installation of a 'mechanical diesel' makes a project a lot easier, but apart from all these electronics, you just have to like the engine characteristic and fuel economy that the computer controller injection puts out.

Yes, I got that wrong.
I guess swapping in the DI motor without the electronic VE pump is quite a challenge.
Might as well go the whole enchilada of a CDI motor.
I drove a 270CDI Sprinter once and could not believe the power for such a big vehicle.

And with another source I got a pic of a 290GDT running chassis, see sensor on the back of the transfer case:

This was a great thread to revisit. I have been looking for a picture of the later GDT290 driveline.
Does anybody have any information on the transfercase flange where the CV driveshaft mounts to?

I have been searching for years in the EPC, browsing for the right one, but even with VIN numbers for vehicles build in 2001. They indicate the normal 100mm flange, where the old style U-joint driveshaft mounts to.

Any chance that the normal 100mm flange is used on the transfercase. Then when you get the right GDT290 specific CV shaft, it has a two part mounting?
So first you put on a "adapter" and then you mount the CV joint to that?

Anybody worked on this combination of VG80 transfercase and CV driveshaft?

Hi Johnny,

See the picture, is this what you were looking for?

I used VIN 4613361711x073 for this.

Re: 460G with OM602 290TD engine

Hmmnn... I have looked at that picture many times. And that tells us a vehicle with CV driveshaft.
To me the exploded view no. 17 is the CV joint itself.

Staying with the same vehicle, when going into the transfercase under "transmission case and cover" and looking at the input flange.
It always comes out to Coupling Flange 100mm, front and rear.

It never indicate anything about the specific flange for mating the CV driveshaft to. Yet on the picture you have of a GDT290 drivetrain. That flange shape seems to be just like the ones on 463 models.

This is where I get stuck. Clearly it must exist, it's on the picture. But finding the part no. in the EPC in no easy task.

RE: 460G with OM602 290TD engine

No complete conversion without changing the emblems, 290GD at last!

Now 2 things left to do:
- automatic shifter bracket installation
- 3,72:1 axle conversion
