| G-wagen Rally from LA to New York - Ground Zero
The tenth year anniversary of September 11, 2001 is just a couple day away.
It will be a very somber day for many of us.
I like to start a G-wagen Rally in the spring of 2012 from Los Angeles to New York to visit the new 9/11 Memorial Site at Ground Zero.
Everybody is welcome to join me on that trip, for the whole adventure or just parts of it. I know, sometimes many would like to join, but in the end it could be a lonely drive for me.
Don't worry I can handle this with no problems.
Maybe to route could be layed out to see/visit fellow forum members on both ways of the trip.
So please indulce me with your ideas and plans, timing and suggested routes and so on.

if u come to NYC .. take off your accessories hanging outside .... they will fly away on their own
or the Port Authority Police will harass u. Too many threats and too much paranoia during the
anniversary weekend.
i think visit all three sites would be great. Pentagon Arlington VA, Shankville PA and NYC. Personally I would stay away
from NYC during that weekend. Only nuts would want to visit the site during that
weekend. I can join u for the duration of the east coast tour. I can also help arrange a rally
in hoboken or as a mtg point for NYC rally.
POI:
1) Liberty Park overlooking Statue of liberty in NJ ... open space for many Gs, good picnic area
2) Rally thru 42nd st at night .. many G gawkers and great way to see NYC by night ... in ur G
3) Rally thru 14th st on Sun morning ... meat packing district ... for breakfast ... free parking on coble stone roads
4) G meeting point in Hoboken, breakfast, take train to NY Ground Zero and dinner in Hoboken.
5) Philly cheese steak would be great stop from DC to NY at Pats Steak in Philadelphia

7) Early Fall Foliage in Connecticut or upstate NY.
Local chapter of MB will sure lend a hand in arranging a gathering of MBs vehicles also.

let me know if you drive thru pittsburgh as opposed to rt 80 of 90. i'll buy the beer. ottos hofbrau haus closed, but theres some generic commercial german still around.

I'd love to join you on a leg thru AZ for either the journey or the return. You've also got a guaranteed rest stop at my house if you need it for breakfust, lunch, dinner, cigars, lodging, etc - come on over!

We are interested in a ride like that especially if it goes thru the Southeast. Atlanta (I-20) or Nashville (I-40) would be great. I-40 is the pits because shifted concrete sections. It is rough as a corn cob and shook light bulbs loose in my G last year! |

Karl, if you take the Southern route, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is a must: Mercedes factory, Dreamland, Roll Tide, some tornado experience etc. and there is always a place to stay for you. |

Well, the former site, anyway, of the only steel frame building to ever collapse as a result of "office fires", and according to NIST, at free fall speed, no less. It is perplexing, but fortunately no one was killed, so not as somber a site as the Towers, nor as much press since it happened 5 hours later (and was pre-announced by the BBC fifteen or twenty minutes early).

My former company Salomon Brothers were the original tenant in early 90s. They were the pioneer in failure paranoia with UPS and remote data center and alternate location trading floors. Disaster recovery is the common term now. I often hear ... "what happened if we got it by a plane?"
The whole place has backups of everything. The 2nd and 3rd floors housed generators and enough diesel to keep the building juiced up
for a few days. Well its the diesel that did it. At least that is what I heard.
Lots of memory for me .... a lot of sleepless nights before the move in. My first taste at dealing with unions when it was still a construction site.
I shed my tears when I saw it went down ... on TV ...
And I remembered the '93 bombing well. Only a few doors down from #1 and #2.

Maybe we could do the Natchez Trace and/or the Blue Ridge Parkway. Both are beautiful drives if trying to see America and not trying to run a marathon. |

And yet, diesel fuel doesn't burn hot enough to melt steel. 
Let me know if anyone is going to be on the Blue Ridge Parkway, less than a day's drive for me an a beautiful fall trip.
