New Speakers in older G

I decided to upgrade the radio (Serius) in my 1980 G
Tirnd out that there are not a lot of options where to put new front speakers, doors are out they are to thin for any speakers I could find.
Thought about bedind the front seats on the sides, would have to cut holes in metal so that was out.
So here is what I came up with for the front.
The only place that really seemed to work was in the roof right behind the sun visors. There is enough room, a wat to run the wires easly and sounds pretty good,
The back set was easy but figured if anyone else was thinking about nice 6" speakers they may want to take a look at placing them there.

You may want to get speakers with neodymium magnets (on woofer). Unfortunately, speakers with NEO are fairly expensive. NEO magnets are very small/slim...therefore, you save a lot of space over the regular ferrite magnets.

You may have to get 4" speakers to make them fit....

RE: New Speakers in older G

I'll try and take some pictures this weekend. I have constructed mounts for my 6x9" 4 way speakers from wood to mount ontop of the orginal holes in front.
Basically I have sunken shafts in the mount to enable them to screw into the car and then just screw the speakers onto the mount.
Works very well and do not interfere with foot space.

Johann,
Do you have any more pictures of your interior? I see that you have a Line-X or Rhino-coat inside of the truck. I was interested in how that looks and what you think of it so far?

RE: New Speakers in older G

My cabrio stands on 235\85\16's. Used heavily offroad and so far no problems. Deep river crossings could be a problem but never had more that 1" of water at my feet.
Call me lucky or what? Just don't get stuck. If the worst happens at least I could listen to the Titanic's theme song.

Dutch for big feet I have no advice even with Salomon Mountaineering boots the speaker posed no problem thus you must be XXXL.
I wonder if it is true what they say about people with big feet.......

Chuck the lining works like a charm and looks good. I'll take some pictures of the inside for you. It is indestructible. My cabrio is used for hunting, farming, fencing, road building etc. and the surface doesn't even looked touched.
Just make sure the surface is 100% rust free before applying.

I dont know but... I was stripping the carpet out of my 87 G and found the panels that access the body to chassis bolts under the rear seat they looked to me a good place to put a couple of round speakers especially as there is quite a big void behind. what are your thoughts?
I unfortunately have size 14 UK or 49 euro shoes so thespeakers would always bein my way too

Re: New Speakers in older G

same foot problem as greeny here, size 14 too.

on the subject of speakers, i had my front ones replaced with ones the same size, and to be honest, if you buy a quality small speakers they should be just as good as the 6x9's. in the rear, (this is a swb 460 btw) i had my speakers set into where my rear ashtrays were, they had to cut a bit of metal, but it was deep enough for them, also gives a nice surround sound effect. if your after bass, why not buy a simple 'sub in a box' set up for in the rear, they can easily be taken in and out with all the modern clips and connections. i will get some pictures of my speakers if you would like.

i used an all alpine system, but from what my brother used in his van, infinity are very good.

Tom

p.s did you know theres a £20k+ option of having a Linn soundsystem fitted to your Aston Martin! i know there home systems are good, but surely with that engine noise you wont be able to tell the difference!?

ok here we go,

first one is the footwell,

this ones the rear speaker in the ashtray position...

and this is my head unit. note the 'glide touch bar' works along the same line as the ipod wheel, except its a bit of a gimmic and isnt easy to work with. i do like alpine head units though, the one in my sisters car must be at leasts 12 years old nd it still works perfect, not something you usually get.

hope the post works and hope its a bit of an insight,

Tom

hi, the speakers are all Alpine, i jus thought id keep the same make for the whole system. Infinity are a very good make, but the prices are high. ebay is a great place to buy the stuff, prices are a lot cheaper, but it can be good sometimes to go in a shop and get their opinion.
